oh gawd!!! I'm tired of looking at threads hoping to find new information regarding a project and seeing posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the thread title!!! I don't post much, but I check SSP every single day. I vote for JDRCrash to be banned.

Now that I've seen more concrete renderings, I can honestly say that I really like the design of The Grand. The retail portion looks to be lively and vibrant but in a subtle yet dynamic way (talk about jusxposition..hope I spelled that right). Mabye in the 10 or so months that it'll take for it to break ground, more tweaks will occor to make it even better.

You can see hints of the W.D. Concert Hall in the retail section of The Grand in this rendering.

L.A., County Officials Expect to Get Funds for Downtown Park

The $26.4 million, earmarked for a 16-acre space between City Hall and the Music Center, must be approved by the governor.

By Cara Mia DiMassa, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 26, 2008

Downtown's great park took a step closer to reality today.

City and county officials announced today that they expect to receive $26.4 million in state funds for a civic park between City Hall and the Music Center that will be built as part of the $3-billion Grand Avenue project.

The 16-acre park already has more than $50 million committed, from fees paid by the project's developer, Related Cos., to the city and county, which own the land. But the extra funds will allow additional enhancements to the park's initial design, officials said. The civic park must be completed before the rest of Grand Avenue's first phase, in part because agreements with the public agencies dictate that Related will not be given certificates of occupancy for the rest of the development until the park is complete.

The state funds were authorized by the Assembly today as part of a bill allocating $150 million of Proposition 1C funds. The disbursement must be approved by the governor, who is expected to sign the bill either Friday or Monday. If approved, the money will go to the county, which will administer the park funds.

Grand Avenue Park Gets State Funding

News Brief

The state Assembly last Thursday approved a $26.4 million grant for the 16-acre Civic Park that will be part of developer Related Cos.' $3 billion Grand Avenue project. The allocation, created by Proposition 1C, requires the signature of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, which is expected by Monday. The park will rise on county-owned land stretching from the Music Center to City Hall. Part of the first phase of the Frank Gehry-designed project officially dubbed The Grand, the park is scheduled to break ground next spring and wrap in 2011. It was originally budgeted for the $56 million already in hand, covered by Related's ground lease payment to develop the parcel. Developers and members of the Grand Avenue Authority, the city-county agency that is overseeing the project, earlier this year announced that they would seek additional funds, and said the budget could rise to as high as $120 million. The extra money will allow the developer to incorporate enhanced features into the initial designs. Highlights of the planned park include a renovation of the existing historic fountain, performance venues and a three-quarter-mile pedestrian loop. Although Related has delayed groundbreaking on the first phase of The Grand several times because of the real estate crisis, the developer said the park will proceed on schedule.

County supervisors did, but hadn't heard yet about the Grand Avenue Authority who were supposed to approve it by the 21st, yesterday.

It's been how many years? I just don't see this project happening. They really need to spare everyone and just announce that they've scrapped the project. Frankly, the Gehry design is a mess and it would be better if they just started over.

agree, that final model of grand avenue doesn't please me at all...

too short, bad design, and little prominence.

Gehry's first proposal was perfect for that location in my opinion.

Related locks down City Council approval for Grand Avenue Project, names Chinese investor

Quote:
The Los Angeles City Council greenlighted Related Companies’ Grand Avenue project Wednesday, marking the last in a long line of approvals the company needs to move forward.

Over the last three weeks, the massive Downtown project — more than 10 years in the works — received approvals from the L.A. Grand Avenue Authority, the County of L.A. and the successor agency to the now-defunct Community Redevelopment Agency of L.A.
Related also announced Wednesday a joint venture partnership with Chinese real estate firm, CCCG Overseas Real Estate (CORE), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company.

CORE will funnel $290 million into the next phase of the project. This will be CORE’s first real estate investment in the U.S., its president Ren Hongpeng said.

Known as Parcel Q, the two-tower project will break ground in 2018 and is slated for completion in 2022. It will include an Equinox hotel as well as a 38-story residential complex with 429 units and retail space. Approximately 20 percent of the new residences will be affordable, according to the Related announcement.

Related’s budget for the project has risen from $750 million to $950 million, according to amended plans revealed by the L.A. County’s Chief Executive Office.
