Province invests $536K in composites research centre

The Composites Innovation Centre (CIC) is celebrating its 10th anniversary today with the announcement that the province is investing an additional $536,000 in the research centre.

Over the years the CIC has led a substantial number of initiatives in developing the use of composites in all sorts of industrial applications.

It has become Canada’s largest composite technology centre and is on the leading edge of global research in the innovative use of composites for many new applications.

It has initiated 305 projects with 110 industry partners and 40 government agencies. This includes supporting the development of 51 technologies and 17 new processing capabilities transferred to industry and now in commercial use, and conducting research to further the development of natural fibres to support their use in industrial applications.

I'm happy about finding other uses for Hemp...etc.. The provincial investment is nice as well.

Someone already posted this development but.....

Selkirk set to boast new hotel
Among major new tenants in growing power centre

Canalta Hotels, a 35-year-old, family-owned company that operates 38 hotels in Alberta and Saskatchewan, has a new 84-room hotel under construction in the Selkirk Crossing retail power centre on the western outskirts of Selkirk.

A spokesman for the power centre's developer -- Winnipeg's Shindico Realty Inc. -- said the hotel is scheduled to open next summer and is Canalta's first in Manitoba.

The new Canalta Hotel will feature an indoor swimming pool and a conference facility. Pearson said it will be the city's largest hotel and the first to be built in a number of years.

The water park at the forks has been downgraded to a >>>>>>>>Indoor swimming pool?
Good for the town of Selkirk though...

Port of Churchill records latest season ever

The shipping season at the Port of Churchill extended into November — the latest date ever for a ship leaving the port — resulting in one of the busiest years ever for the port.

OmniTRAX Canada reported total volume in excess of 600,000 tonnes for the 2013 season. The port has averaged about 550,000 tonnes over the past several years. In 1977 the port shipped a record 710,000 tonnes.

Merv Tweed, president of OmniTRAX Canada, said more than 600,000 tonnes of grain and oilseeds moved through the port this season. Wheat accounted for most of the grain loaded during the season, with some durum and canola also being shipped. In addition to grain and oil seeds, the shipping season also included three vessels loaded with re-supply shipments, which included petroleum products for the northern territory of Nunavut.

I'm shocked.. petroleum products being shipped through Churchill for the last decade!!
Better stop now, people will be pissed off if they knew.

These guys (Yancoal) are in the race to build the 3rd new greenfield potash mine in SK (after BHP and K+S). I believe their permits are generally north of Regina. They are well behind Western, Vale, Rio Tinto, Encanto and Karnalite though.

^ So in general, are you happy with "China's" ever growing role in Potash Dev. in Sask. ?

Quote:
"On the other hand, the cartel breakup leaves more development opportunities and room for emerging potash enterprises. Therefore we are bound to look at the short-term effect of market monopoly integration-breakdown in a long-term perspective, given the long life of a mine project, and conduct target market analysis and study accordingly and thoroughly."

"Therefore further learning and adaptation to the local laws and regulations as well as cultural customs are needed," Ma pointed out. "Also Chinese enterprises should look for understanding and support thorough engagement with the local communities and indigenous people to pursue win-win and cooperative mutual development."
The Chinese are amazing when it comes to acquisition, investment and take over of foreign resources. They say so much, but so little in thier comments. Brilliant.

More investment is good. Of course when a major customer of a resource that is taxed on price is involved there are concerns. The royalty regime is very sensitive to price, so if the Chinese goal is to greatly reduce the price, adjustments to the royalty regime may be required.

About frikkin time. That road is a disgrace, though not surprising for Manitoba. I wish they would fix that 10-16 cluster f*** intersection at Minnedosa, the number of people killed and injured there is horrible.

PTH 10 is probably the most sub-par highway in Manitoba relative to traffic counts. The stretch between Brandon and Minnedosa is one of the busiest sections of 2-lane road in the province, and it gets badly choked on summer weekends.

Once 59 is twinned north and south, 10 would be the next logical road to focus on when it comes to twinning.

Link to the MIT press release. They say more projects will be added to the list based on recent announcements about core infrastructure.

Indian food truck heats up Thompson's food scene
Sid Verma wanted to be northern Manitoba city's 1st Indian cuisine vendor
CBC News Posted: Dec 04, 2013 6:29 AM CT

Spicy dishes and red-hot sales are coming out of the first Indian food truck to operate in the northern Manitoba city of Thompson.

Since Sid Verma and his wife started Chillax in a trailer this past summer, they have been met with success and even fan mail from happy customers.

"When this thing is on, the aroma goes out and the person who is just walking beside my trailer is forced to come in front [and ask], 'What are you making?'" he said.
