East Side Road

The east side road starts at Hollow Water First Nation and follows the logging road known as Rice River Road up to Bloodvein First Nation. That is the first phase. The second phase will be to take it from Bloodvein up to Poplar River, then keep going north up the entire east side of the lake.

Since the Yellow head has come up, check out this vid:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oIs4JzJjgc

Interesting to see our drive summed up in such a short time, given the amount of time it takes to actually make the trip.

Hwy 1 - Yellow head intersection about 1:11 in.

RWB: Forty years of One Night Stands

I happened to catch this on Bravo this evening - it was very interesting. Also had many great shots of streetscapes etc. - only problem was they passed by too quickly. Definitely worth a watch.

Toronto, ON (October 29, 2008) – Premiering Sunday, November 30 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Bravo!, ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET: 40 YEARS OF ONE NIGHT STANDS profiles the groundbreaking ballet company that set the dance world on Prairie fire. Until two British immigrants infused the city with a shot of culture, depression-era Winnipeg was a lonesome place. In the remote Canadian Prairies, Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Hey Farrally founded Canada’s first professional ballet company. Lloyd and Farrally laid the groundwork, but it was basketball-player-turned-ballet-dancer-turned-artistic-director, Arnold Spohr, who propelled the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to its place among the world’s best.

The first Canadian company to be granted a “Royal” title, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) has performed in 573 cities, across 44 countries on six continents. From Flin Flon to Moscow, RWB wows audiences and critics alike with its youth, vitality, and innovation. The dream of two determined immigrants has survived flood, financial collapse, and a devastating fire, to become one of the world’s premiere dance companies.

In ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET: 40 YEARS OF ONE NIGHT STANDS, former company members recount the birth and first four decades of this history-making troupe. The 60-minute documentary also includes rarely seen archival footage of the RWB’s most famous performances.

yesterday on CJOB, Gord Steeves said the police is looking at a 3 building model instead of the planned 4 building. The 3 building would mix noth winnipeg with downtown. he then went on to say the POST OFFICE is / has been looked at extensively.

and now today on cbc.ca

Chief wants police station in downtown Winnipeg

Chief Keith McCaskill wants to see Winnipeg's police station remain downtown.

Keith McCaskill is awaiting a report from city planners to tell him if the current Public Safety Building on Princess Street should be renovated or if the headquarters should be located elsewhere.

"If we have it downtown, I think it's great for the area," McCaskill said. "We've got more officers coming and going from the facility. And in the downtown area, it helps to revitalize and so on. That's not a bad thing."

The limestone exterior on the current Public Safety Building is deteriorating.

Police also say the current building no longer functions well for 911 services and people who work on disaster response.

McCaskill said that before long police also will need a new processing unit for prisoners, a larger place to store evidence and a better forensic facility.

City officials say the future of the building will be decided soon.

They better keep the headquarters it downtown, or if they relocate, it also better be in downtown.

Whatever it takes for a bigger police presence in downtown is extremely important, to me anyway. The post office location is a fine idea, IMO. Not sure how important it is for police headquarters to be linked directly to City Hall, in the greater scheme of things... so I've no problem with the post office location.

I also am a big proponent of cameras downtown... put 'em up on every street, sidewalk, back lane, etc.

Manitoba to spend $48M on public housing renovation
Last Updated: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 | 2:44 PM CT

CBC News
Manitoba is doubling — to $48-million — the amount of money it had budgeted for renovations to public housing in Winnipeg and Brandon.

Family Services and Housing Minister Gord Mackintosh said the plan is to upgrade about 900 apartments and townhouses.

"We are committing to revitalizing affordable housing across the province," Mackintosh announced Tuesday. "By renovating Manitoba Housing’s aging stock, we will boost the Manitoba economy and ensure our tenants have modern, comfortable homes."

The renovation of public housing will create jobs, he said, through community programs for young people that will equip them with construction skills.

"It's not just about refreshing the bricks and mortar and the physical structure — it's also about enhancing the skills of people who live here it's about making sure they have opportunities … for learning."

For many of the public housing units it will be the first time they have been upgraded. Work will include new flooring, cupboards, patching and painting.

Bob Geldof accepts humanitarian award in Manitoba: Former guest at the Winnipeg Y to receive key to the city

Last Updated: Wednesday, December 3, 2008 | 12:17 PM CT
CBC News

Rock star turned humanitarian Bob Geldof was in Winnipeg Wednesday to receive the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation's 2008 International Award.

Stuart Murray, the foundation's CEO, said Geldof would have a busy day in the Manitoba capital

"The last time that he really … spent time in Winnipeg is when he was a young, you know, rock 'n' roller," said Murray. "He remembers staying at the Y, and he was so cold that his jeans were frozen. So it's kind of nice to go from having frozen jeans and staying at the Y to getting the key to the City of Winnipeg."

Part of Geldof's visit includes rubbing shoulders with Manitobans — representatives from Winnipeg Harvest and the Siloam Mission — who are working with the poor.

"We tried to include some of the community members that are involved in that," said Murray. "So he had a chance to sort of meet them and sort of get a sense of what a great community Winnipeg is and what tremendous contributions people here are making around poverty and in that area."

Geldof was to tour the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre and have lunch with community leaders.

His agenda also included a trip to Winnipeg city hall to get the key to the city.

Hannah Taylor of the Ladybug Foundation was to present Geldof with his award at a gala dinner Wednesday night.

Aspers fall off 'Rich 100' list

The declining fortunes of Canwest Global Communications have smacked the Asper family in their pocketbooks.

The majority owners of the Winnipeg-based media conglomerate have fallen off Canadian Business magazine’s Rich 100 list, its annual compilation of the wealthiest Canadians.

A year ago, the fortunes of David, Gail and Leonard Asper were valued at $833 million, good enough for 64th position, but down from $1.1 billion and 24th place the year before.

As of the magazine’s cut-off date of Nov. 3, their net worth had fallen further to $341 million, more than $120 million below the "poorest" member of this year’s Rich 100, Montreal’s Molson family, whose beer-soaked empire was valued at $464 million.

Alex Mlynek, Upfront editor at Canadian Business, said the Aspers’ fortunes have fallen even further in the last month as shares in Canwest have dropped from 95 cents to about 65 cents.

The economic slowdown has not affected the Richardson family. Their conglomerate of agriculture, real estate, financial services and oil and gas companies drove their net worth up to $2.34 billion (19th place), up from $2 billion (22nd place) a year ago.

Peter Nygard, the Finnish-born fashion mogul and former Winnipegger now living in the Bahamas, inched up two spots to 78th with a net worth of $676 million, up from $662 million.

Randy Moffat, former CEO and majority shareholder of Moffat Communications, rounds out the Manitobans on the list. He remains in 82nd place with a net worth of $598 million, down from $661 million last year.

DOER STATE OF THE PROVINCE TODAY

Manitoba won’t import the political paralysis that’s gripped Ottawa over the past week and will instead embrace a steady-as-she-goes approach to protect the province from a gathering economic storm, Premier Gary Doer told a luncheon crowd today.

At his annual state-of-the province address to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce today, the premier said Manitoba is going ahead with tax cuts to business and accelerated infrastructure-renewal spending to boost the local economy and give business a sense of predictability in unpredictable times.

Doer also used the occasion to announce a new provincial tax credit to increase training and offset labour shortages. The apprenticeship tax credit, along with an existing federal tax credit, is designed to be an incentive to retain apprentices though all levels of training. It comes into effect Jan. 1. The new tax credit is worth about $3 million a year to employers.

Doer also said he believes construction of the Canadian Museum and Human Rights and a new football stadium are extremely close to being announced, but he provided no further details.

A chamber spokesman said the luncheon attracted a sell-out crowd of 700 local business people, the largest gathering for a state-of-the province address in five years.

WOW! we know that Doer can now step down in 3 yrs and NDP will stay in power

Blaikie to run provincially

Bill Blaikie, the NDP's elder stateman in Manitoba, is jumping into provincial politics.

The recently retired federal MP from Elmwood-Transcona, is seeking the provincial nomination in Elmwood. He's filed his papers with the party, said party provincial secretary Sonia Kowalewich.

He's battling two other candidates - Darryl Livingstone and Ed Innes - for the right to carry the NDP banner in the upcoming byelection.

The nomination meeting is in very short order - Dec. 14.

But Premier Gary Doer hasn't called a byelection yet. He's expected to do that in time for a spring race.

If Blaikie wins the nomination and the seat, it means he would have swapped jobs with former Elmwood MLA Jim Maloway, who resigned from provincial politics to run for Blaikie's old federal seat.

And it would likely kickstart speculation about the next leader of the provincial NDP should Doer ever step down. Blaikie is well-regarded within the party, and would likely be considered a possible successor to Doer.

I'm not a personal fan of Blaikie's politics, but he is a very honourable man. Great to see him at the provincial table if everything works out as one would imagine it will. I have nothing but the highest regard for the man as an individual.

On CBC radio today he indicated that he had no aspirations to become party leader. Just wanted to be at home more, and when Doer called Blaikie agreed to run for the nomination. Best of both worlds potentially, for Blaikie.
