I'm personally very happy with it. As Andy already alluded to, it is uniquely Winnipeg's. No city slogan is going to draw up corporate movement of mass-immigration/migration, or any other positive event. Not too dig too deep, but "heart" as a word generally does have strong cultural (and obviously emotional) undertones to it, which is a desired effect. It speaks to a central location of movement, also a desired image/sound bite of what we view Winnipeg or what we want it to be (a transport hub).

I just don't see much to complain about ...except maybe the image needing to be replaced in 2011 to accomodate the iconic CMHR.

It's neither overdone NOR underdone. It's just right, and I'm happy about that slogan.

Don't count on it as Winnipeg/Katz is putting on a major press to build a major full service inland port in the city. This will be a massive economic driver in the city and result in significant economic stimulation.

The Heart of the Continent slogan plays right into that. The museum will be nice but not nearly on the same scale as making Winnipeg into a designated major inland port.

The Real "Heart Of The Continent"

CJOB's Jeff Braun reporting
9/11/2008

The Town of Rugby, North Dakota has a bone to pick with Winnipeg.

Don Sobolik, the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce of Rugby tells CJOB his town is the actual Heart of The Continent.

With tongue firmly in cheek, he says Winnipeg should remove the new Heart of The Continent signs on the outskirts of the city...

Sobolik says a survey done in 1931 proved Rugby was the geographical center of North America, and he says they have a monument to prove it.

Wrong.

They are the centre of the continent. Winnipeg is the Heart of the Continent. Lateral - to the left of the midline.

I agree with most, love the slogan, it fits perfectly and the sign/image are a major improvement over the old pathetic signage.

and for vid was just in T. Bay and it truly is a beautiful natural landscape...

Oh for fuck sakes. Was it a slow news day or something? Was this the top story in Winnipeg today?

I wonder how many Americans outside of North Dakota (maybe South Dakota too) knows that they exist?

Nipigon advertises itself as the centre of the continent, too!

Actually, so does Thunder Bay, not as a slogan or anything but the phrase "in the geographic centre of North America" or something like that usually accompanies the city's promotional material.

Thunder Bay has the best city slogan ever.

"Superior By Nature."

I love it!

'Heart of the Continent' feels rather generic, but I can see it's value as an effective marketing slogan.

Personally, I was hoping the 'Muddy Waters, Clear Skies' slogan would win out. It has character, and is just as genuine. Although, it may not feel "sexy" enough from a selling standpoint. It'd be cool to see it displayed at The Forks though, something similar to the 'iamsterdam' sign (I think that was mentioned before on these boards, can't remember when though).

Did "Heart Of The Continent" just come from the movie My Winnipeg. Guy Maddin says it a few times during the film.

What does heart of the continent really mean? Then the slogan of New York may be: "tip of Manhattan". Is there any intrinsic quality with a geographical position? I mean a very particular postion may be noteworthy (i.e. Istanbul in 2 continents), but to be at the center of a continent that is frozen wasteland for the top half?
