^ Wow, yeah, looks like they're getting ready for the big float. I'll try to swing by and get some photos today.

Not sure how often the bridgecam is refreshed, but I think they've got a ways to go yet. Still no east span on the north bank for instance.

Stay warm!

They are not going to install the arch until spring. They still have to install one more end at the North bank and at the current rate that will finish up end of December.

I feel like they've decided a while back to install the arch in the spring, and they've been planning on blaming it on the weather but now they are stuck looking like fools.

You sure?

'Cause looks like part of the span is already over the water (well barge in the water).

http://earthcam.net/projects/islengineering/ You'll need to use the zoom feature - top left.

Watch the video again:

The central arch can be raised before the other pieces are in place; that's what the red support structures are for.

and the big crane on the north shore looks like its preparing to lift the last (east) shore arch into place right away... the river looks to be freezing up though.

As I have pointed out in a very early post, the river has mostly been ice bound in early December. I only remember one time in the 80's that the river was ice free in Dec.

As for the north bank. it looks like it is taking about a week or more to get each section bolted together, and seeing that there are at least 3 sections left to lift. the arch will be sledded across around Christmas.

But I thought we confirmed there was no need to wait for the north bank section to float the arch out to the temporary supports?

It also seems a bit odd to start transferring the upper arch load to the barge now if they have no intent of floating it out in the near future.

They certainly have been lucky with the weather though! If they do plan on doing it before contending with ice too much they really need to get it done soon.

What little research I've googled suggests average NSR freeze-up first or second week of December.

But three things, it hasn't been terribly cold; we haven't much snow, which also contributes to freeze-up; and those berms at the bridge site are really speeding up the river flow, which will make it that much harder for ice to develop.

Fourth (forgot) the hot water discharge from the U of A power plant is just upstream of the Walterdale.

Oh and fifth, I wanna take a day off and watch this!

The barge at the very end of the arch is off now. (Progress between 0:34 and 0:36 in the video).

Next step would be sliding/floating out...

My left coast family will arrive at Christmas and think the airline dropped them off at the wrong city. Love it.

They are sure pushing that last piece, they just have to lift them onto the thrust blocks and they will be able to set the upper arch.

^ Upper arch will be connected to the mid pieces first, and then that whole assembly lifted onto the final pieces which connect to the thrust blocks (according to the video).

Damn, looking at the webcam that sucker is moving out right now, and I don't think I'll be able to get down there with my camera

Unless they have flood lights, can't see this getting started in the rapidly diminishing daylight.

My bet is tomorrow or the weekend. But, I'm a lousy gambler, so you can take that with a grain of salt.
