yah the money for these things has to come from somewhere the less from us taxpayers the better - these facilities only serve a small amount of the population unless you go to the games there is no point to go to the buildings

^ This is especially true for public-funded stadiums... the naming rights effectively mean the private sector pays for part of the stadium, which is a good thing for all taxpayers.

Now, if they were to rename it Olympic Stadium (or Olympic Place or similar), I would be quite pleased... But otherwise, sell those naming rights.

But then that would lead to ... "the Big Owe".

The red and grey seats probably have to do with a sponsor but on the other hand maybe they just picked those cause they didn't have much of a choice. They couldn't pick the colours of any of the two sports teams cause it would be biased towards one of them. Orange and black would be out for aesthetic reasons anyway. Shades of blue would be seen as favouring the Caps and besides they probably wanted a colour that is different from before so the stadium looks refreshed.

So what you're left with in contemporary stadium seat colours are - dark green, reds, and greys. Grey being the most logical but bland so they threw in some colour as well. If there wasn't ever a sponsor planned, then I'd have done the exact same seat colours as well.

I wonder if one of the banks will step up. Only Scotia (Ottawa) and TD (Boston) have named sports arenas if I recall. RBC Place?

RBC Centre - Raleigh, NC - Hurricanes
Although not a big arena or stadium, BMO has BMO Field in TO - TFC.

Hmm, the colors are correct for HSBC... or Scotiabank...?

Or just maybe, seats are not chosen for sponsors, since seats outlive naming rights...

Just saw on Twitter that the plans for Douglas Coupland's new Terry Fox memorial at BC Place will be unveiled tomorrow.

New memorial for Terry Fox
VANCOUVER/CKNW AM 980
Charmaine de Silva
1/18/2011

Terry Fox's parents joined Premier Gordon Campbell this morning for the unveiling of the new memorial to the Canadian hero at BC Place.

The tribute was designed by artist Douglas Coupland, known for his 2005 book about Fox.

Coupland says it consists of four bronze statues of Fox's legendary running motion, which will face west in the Terry Fox Plaza, just a few kilometres from where Fx planned to finish his Marathon of Hope.

"......There's a bit of an optical illusion...as these four bronzes appear in the plaza they also grow in size...from life size, to twice life size."

BC Place officials consulted Fox's family before this memorial was planned, something they were criticized for not doing with the old memorial.

It will be finished by the fall.

EDIT: Looking at BC Place in the background of that first picture, it appears that the lower portion of BC Place is getting a facelift too. Were we aware of that new stadium entrance?

Nice.
Interestingly, though, since it's not as tall or bulky as the arch, it won't be as prominent from a distance.
There's been a tarp up on the arch for a while now (presumably for demolition).

Anyone notice the glass on the ramps in behind the sculpture?
... and the flat roof with cornice section of concourse (that may be an extension of the casino tie-in?)

Thanks for the pics. In the first picture there, is that arc-like building actually going to be there? that's a massive piece of architecture, and if it's not going to look good, than I'd rather have it not built. Realistically...I can't see it being built there. Odd looking structure. Or maybe, it's just something the artist put in there, for the sake of putting something there.

For the Terry Fox memorial I was expecting something a lot bigger then that. At least have a podium people can walk up to make it more prominent.
