Austin's skyline definitely does feel a lot bigger than it is, especially in photos. It's a very photogenic skyline. I can't imagine what it will look like once everything is built out.

I remember in 2006 a coworker and I were talking about downtown and I suggested that Austin might have a skyscraper boom and imagined what it would be like if they built more skyscrapers. He laughed and said there was no space to build skyscrapers in downtown. Well, I wonder if he
remembers that conversation. Cause he sure was wrong.

I've been trying to figure out this why this. For instance, Houston has a monster skyline that feels relatively small. I think it has something to do with natural boundaries. The river makes the city seem small because there is no where to expand, Houston downtown is the exact opposite.

Also the buildings in Austin are mostly even in height and there isn't one tower extremely taller than the rest. Ironically, I think once 6X gets built, the skyline might actually feel smaller.

DT seems flat but is in fact on a gentle rise -- so if you're looking from a lower point everything looks fantastic. But if you're not, it's slightly less impressive.

6X will definitely change our perceptions of the rest of the city. It's going to dwarf everything around it for the next 2 or 3 years. But then, slowly . . . it's going to seem less impressive when BBVA gets up there, and the Republic, and 5C, and the Rainey cluster. Not to mention whatever starts to pop in the Westward Expansion parcels.

I'm constantly having to remind myself that what we're seeing now isn't anywhere near DT's final form. Some of the biggest changes aren't even here yet.

IMO a lot of it is that Houston's DT office buildings follow different proportions than ours do, their width scaling with their height. All those bulky buildings bunched together screws our sense of scale up, and there's really not much mid-range height building up to it. From many angles their DT is wall-like.

Meanwhile Austin's two tallest are skinny residential point towers, which emphasizes their verticality and allows them to feel tall without dwarfing the shorter buildings around them. I agree that when 6x gets built (which is bulkier but still not the bulk of Houston's giants) it will put into perspective the fact that the Austonian and Indy aren't really all that tall or big.

It's not actually in the parking lot, it's on the other side of the fence inside Un-bar-lievable. It's a weird circus themed bar associated with the same one on Rainey. It popped up there during the pandemic and would seem to signal that this lot is still a ways off from getting any new development.

i bet the cvc has a larger impact on this feel than the river. forces our density to cluster.

also very unfortunate situation over there with two highways cutting through their downtown. both elevated too iirc

Down too one crane

Removal of Tower Crane inside the garage is occurring this weekend. The one on Guadalupe will be the one that stays.

That yellow shit is screwing up my floor count, but it looks like we're just a few floors away from 1/3 completed.

It's showing up from South First Street now south of Oltorf. I also saw it from I-35 last week from around 7th Street. And, of course, it's quite noticeable now from I-35 from around the Moody Arena/south of the upper deck.
