The population numbers for places like McMurray are skewed, According to Alberta Housing there is approximately 30000 people living in basement suite or renting a room in a friends house that are not counted. When I last flew with some government types they estimate Regoinal Municipality of Wood Buffalo. real time pop at over 100,000.

Oh wow, that's interesting. I wonder when or if they will formalize that number? Basement suites are still illegal there, aren't they?

Alberta now has 8 cities with populations exceeding 50 000, and is soon to have 5 cities with populations exceeding 100 000 (Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge). Very cool!

I would not be surprised with the next census numbers soon to be released if Edmonton's Metro area has not closed the margin with Calgary's , the job market in the Edmonton area seems to be a lot more active last couple of years.

By closed, I'm sure you mean narrowed. Edmonton has likely grown at record numbers as well, but growing by 80 - 100 000 in one year is not likely

One thing I find quite interesting is of the 6 major neighbours to Calgary: Cochrane, Airdrie, Strathmore, Okotoks, Chestermere and to some extent High River, all are of a size to qualify for city classification, but only Airdrie is, the rest are towns. I guess it's probably part of their branding so to speak to be a quiet small town atmosphere, away from the big city. With Okotok's plan to hit something like 90k people in the next 30 years though I can't see that lasting.

Wasn't Edmonton's municipal census supposed to be released today?

Crossfield just reported in... their growth was less than stellar at 57 people over the past 4 years. They are close to passing the 3000 mark though.

There are only 2 cities (Edmonton and Canmore) and 4 towns (Woodlands, Raymond, Drayton Valley, and Calmar) left to report in at this point. Edmonton should be any day now

Census numbers for Edmonton are out

2014 - 877,926

2012 - 817,498

So 60,000 growth in the last 2 years in the City of Edmonton alone.

Finally! WOOT That isn't bad. That rate is actually faster than the city of Calgary I believe. Or at least very close.

To put it in perspective. Edmonton just sucked up Medicine Hat in two years.

Yikes.

Yeah and just think, the surrounding communities have been growing historically at a faster rate. Last year the rate was 3.8% as per Stats Canada for the Edmonton CMA. So assuming 3.9% growth for this year (since Edmonton proper growth has increased) it indicates a CMA population of 1,339,857. I also recall the Census Division estimates with only Edmonton CMA municipalities indicated an estimate of 1,337,605. Anyway you cut it, Edmonton CMA is growing at about 50,000 per year.

That is only the city and not the suburbs, which normally see higher growth rates. The suburbs are only growing at a 0.7% surplus rate.

Is there a direct link to the results? I can't seem to find them on there. Good on Edmonton! Is there a breakdown of areas of the city / maps on where the growth is focused?

The next quarterly provincial estimates should be released soon. I estimate Alberta at about 4 155 000. This translates to a yearly growth of almost exactly 130 000. If we keep up this pace through to 2017, the province be well past 4.5 million.

That's odd. When I posted the link they had the 2014 numbers. Looks like they might have taken them down?
