A month ago in the thread "
Create 1 (one) pedestrian shopping street in your city. Where do you put it?" in the City Discussion forums I too mentioned just such an idea and threw together a quick map of its extent along with other key projects:

From the map we can see that in conjunction conjunction with the Riverwalk, San Pedro Creek, and a closed Alamo Plaza, a pedestrianized Houston Street even further creates an impressive and extraordinary downtown pedestrian network that further connects most key downtown sites and leaves most CBD properties with a walk of just a block or two from the system.
Let's do it!
...
A caveat is that I am not fully confident in the history of success of the conversion of downtown streets to pedestrianized malls in U.S. Badly done or mistimed projects I have read may cull already struggling businesses, and I just do not know if downtown San Antonio, already full of empty storefronts off the Riverwalk, has the density or trajectory to make this successful. Upcoming projects in the pipeline will certainly help, particularly a closer and expanded university campus and the various residential towers and blocks.
