The homicide rate for the region is likely around 3 per 100,000.

Kind of surprised Montreal is only at 17 tbh

Hamilton is at 13 now and we have less than 1/3 the population (536,000)

EDIT: New to this thread, just saw that Montreal typically has a low amount lol

Montréal is actually at 18. With about as many in the off island suburbs.

Montreal has been very low in recent years but it has not always been that way.

Yeah, it wasnt uncommon to see well over 100 homicides in the 70s and 80s. Nowadays 40 would be a bad year (im pretty sure we havent had 40 since 2007). And the population is rising.

Where the hell did all these gang members come from?

Or is their recruitment message too enticing/good?

536k times four is slightly higher than montreal islands population so he's right by saying less than 1/3rd. If we're getting technical...

Even Markham isn’t safe. This gun violence is out of control.

Interesting that York Region has almost the same population as Peel Region, but less than half as many murders.

People in York Region are rich. Peel? Not so much. (I’m assuming there’s correlation between income level and crime rate.)

Edit: PM me and let me know if my comments are off. I have a feeling that my comments are a bit out of the norm lately.

This is SSP man - your comments are far from being "off" by forum standards!

Again, there does not appear to be that much of a difference between York and Peel regions in terms of affluence. I just looked up the StatsCan profiles.

Looking at the incomes of those two regions as a whole isn't very telling imo. They're too large and disjointed. Peel Region blends one of the most expensive areas in the country along Lakeshore with one of the poorest in Malton. York region reaches all the way to Lake Simcoe but obviously there isn't much value in grouping Markham and Keswick, ON together for the purpose of analyzing incomes.

The average/median incomes may play out similar but York undoubtedly contains a much more consistent level of middle to upper middle class safe neighbourhoods while Peel probably features more extremes at either end of the spectrum.

Another factor is Peel Regions poorest areas border the city proper's most notorious neighbourhoods like Rexdale and Jane and Finch. Gangs and violence can spill over into areas that demographically are much more similar than Woodbridge (York Region) to the North. I can't imagine there's a large market for the gangs to be plying their trade amongst the housewives of Woodbridge, but there's a lot to lose by getting the police on you for a high profile murder in an affluent area.

I did think of Malton though homicides in Peel are still reasonably spread out and not always highly concentrated there.

Also, not-so-nice areas of Scarborough are not too far from the York Region border but I guess there may be more of a buffer there created by more affluent areas in Scarborough between them and, say, Markham.

The not too nice areas of Scarborough where most of the homicides take place are South of the 401. The area between the 401 and 407 where York starts is a very wide buffer.

There have been 17 homicides in Brampton so far this year. 9 in Mississauga.

And yet strangely enough, Montreal, Quebec City and Gatineau all generally fare worse than Toronto on Statistics Canada's crime severity index.

I can only wonder what puts us over the top when compared to Toronto? Butt-pinching* in public classified as sexual assault?

*Not that it's that common here. Just being facetious.

It is wrong nowadays, though. Men certainly don't need to do that to be seductive to women.
Even though it still might work, depending on how you look or act while doing it. Women are weird sometimes, hard to understand. They are very subtle and sensitive to the atmosphere and your personal touch at a given moment. I find it fascinating.
But "butt-pinching" is only some old Mediterranean/Catholic sexist tradition. You know, things like Spanish patriarchal habits. They still think they are entitled Don Juan, no matter how bad they smell.
That sucks. Lots of women actually dislike it, cause it makes them feel as if they were sexual slaves/objects.

It has to be reported as crime/sexual assault in stats. They had it coming. Bad Libertine customs are harshly punished in the end.
