As much as snow tires should simply be mandatory across Canada, if the road surface is like an ice rink, they will be absolutely useless.

Highways has pre-treated with Brine. I believe the City tested it.

Thanks. I'm wondering if they found it ineffective here. I know it works well in a climate like Southern Ontario.

Salt doesn't work below about -17 C, so it isn't used much here except during the shoulder seasons.

The best answer is good winter tires. I have rarely found Ring Road traction to be a problem since I started using them about 15 years ago. And I got 11 years out of my last set, so they are a long-lasting investment.

I agree on winter tires, but we have many many days warmer than -17 all months of the winter. Last December no days had highs below -17 and all days but one the mean temperature was warmer than -17. It is usually the days between 0 and -8 that are the iciest.

I don't disagree. But when temperatures are getting up to -8 or -10 and going down to -20, salting is just creating fresh ice every night whereas not salting is allowing traffic to wear away the ice and get to bare dry pavement.

Pretty sure road salt (rock, not brine) is only effective down to -10c... so even less opportunity to use it in Sask.

With the early snowstorm, the opening date will probably need to be pushed back by quite a bit.

Did it only hit Manitoba? I thought the entire Prairies were affected.

Nothing here in Regina. This one was southern Manitoba only. The Calgary area got some snow but I think that was a while back and was a different weather system.

haha, Well when there's a snowstorm in Manitoba, it automatically means there's also a snowstorm in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and when it was snowing in Calgary two weeks ago, it was automatically snowing in Regina & Winnipeg, automatically of course...
...according to our resident weather experts on SSP

In reality, the latest snow accumulation across "the entire Prairies" looks like this:

Regina Bypass opening will have to be pushed back quite a bit,
...because of the snow storm in Winnipeg

Our "National" Media has a certain blind spot when it comes to "The Gap". When they want a "view from the west" they go to Calgary. They hardly talk about Saskatchewan at all and any Joe Blow from Winnipeg is an expert on all things Manitoba!

As to the snow storm, just got off the phone with my farmer brother located just north of Killarney. He could only name a couple of neighbours who were completed harvest prior to the storm. His place has 600 acres of beans still in the field. Others have canola and wheat still to do. Another neighbour who runs a medium sized feedlot still has 1400 acres of corn to process into silage (he also does my brother's corn silage as well and its buried under snow). He told me that 40 miles to the west they got no snow or rain but there was hellish winds that blew the canola swaths into the ditches and fence lines. These same winds caused the blizzard like conditions throughout southern and southeastern MB. One consolation was that they did not lose power and trees like the folks in Portage, Winnipeg and the Interlake.
This is a major disaster for the farmers and ranchers in that area of Manitoba. They're hoping for one more heat wave prior to the onset of real winter.

North Dakota got a lot of snow (including Bismarck; not sure about Minot). But indeed, not a flake in Regina.

What segments are open now? Is Highway 1/Vic East to Arcola still open? How about Highway 1 West to the transportation hub? (Best to get off at Rotary Avenue, though, unless you're going to the hub or west.) I assume the Dewdney exit won't open until the whole thing opens.

Balgonie to Arcola/33 including Vic E to Arcola are open as is #1 to Dewdney but not the full Dewdney interchange.
