I did call out the security issues in the attached office tower long before the media got onto it. The obvious pieces would have been to design the police HQ side to intentionally limit sensitive areas from being near the shared wall and then move tenants such as 311 and the assessment department into the tower where the city could have some level of control over the use of the space, ie not having a defense attorney for gangs sharing a wall with the police gang unit.
In terms of secure parking for police, did that exist at the old Public Safety Building even before the attached parkade was closed? I thought the underground area was official police use only (ie mostly duty cars) and the parkade was fully open to public use. As previously suggested converting level 2 of the library parkade to a secure "police use only" area seems reasonable but it also seems fair to expect police staff to be paying market rates to use the facility. Off hours access could be through access cards to provide authorized access to the skywalk section between the two buildings.
The real challenge isn't so much the police officers want "secure parking" but rather they are trying to push are
free secure parking as close to their work location as possible. Not saying they should not receive that but at the same time ensuring that parking anywhere downtown is safe and secure for all citizens is sort of directly in line with the mission of the WPS. Why should their staff be treated different than say the 311 employee leaving their job in CityPlace at midnight?
