As additional confirmation that the bollards are coming -- they've poured the sidewalks north and south of police headquarters, but they've left the section alongside headquarters unfinished for some time now.

Did they end up going with artistic ones from the contest?

Well played City of Winnipeg. Garry between Graham and St Marys is the most hostile pedestrian environment ever. You have the police HQ sidewalk blocked with all sorts of constructions barriers and have completely ripped out the sidewalk on the other side of the street.

I swear, I will LOSE IT if someone doesn't go to jail for the new PSB. I'm looking at you Katz / Sheegl / Caspian.

A good friend is a senior officer and the stories I hear about construction deficiencies are rage-inducing.

One gem was the floor drains in the showers - not closed off with grout and had insulation exposed so surprise, surprise when all the leaking issues followed. How the hell does that get through a city inspection?
Oh wait, city inspection … right.

I'm guessing that at this point, any cost savings over just demolishing the Canada Post processing plant and building an entirely new, non-deficient police HQ are somewhere between minimal and nonexistent?

Or like how on earth they went ahead with a $300M project and at no point did anybody say "Hey our officers will expect secure parking, where do they park?" or "Oh hey what about that office tower that's connected to it, that's a security issue" .....

Honestly, there has been so many boneheaded decisions made about this project. It's been how many years now, and we're still talking about this, because there's still constant issues with this new HQ.

I actually wish they actually stayed at the old PSB, and with the continuous rising costs well over $300 million, they might as well used that money to completely redo the exterior of the old PSB.

But hey, I'm no city official or contractor involved with this mess of a "project."

I did call out the security issues in the attached office tower long before the media got onto it. The obvious pieces would have been to design the police HQ side to intentionally limit sensitive areas from being near the shared wall and then move tenants such as 311 and the assessment department into the tower where the city could have some level of control over the use of the space, ie not having a defense attorney for gangs sharing a wall with the police gang unit.

In terms of secure parking for police, did that exist at the old Public Safety Building even before the attached parkade was closed? I thought the underground area was official police use only (ie mostly duty cars) and the parkade was fully open to public use. As previously suggested converting level 2 of the library parkade to a secure "police use only" area seems reasonable but it also seems fair to expect police staff to be paying market rates to use the facility. Off hours access could be through access cards to provide authorized access to the skywalk section between the two buildings.

The real challenge isn't so much the police officers want "secure parking" but rather they are trying to push are free secure parking as close to their work location as possible. Not saying they should not receive that but at the same time ensuring that parking anywhere downtown is safe and secure for all citizens is sort of directly in line with the mission of the WPS. Why should their staff be treated different than say the 311 employee leaving their job in CityPlace at midnight?

How about....and hear me out....foot patrols from 6pm to 6am around the new police headquarters. Has to be cheaper than paying countless millions for a new parkade and free parking.

....I would guess the Police Union would object that Police having to do Police work to protect the Police would be against their CBA.

I would be funnier if they got Commissionaires to do it.

May have been mentioned above. But the bollard install has been ongoing on York. Black concrete filled posts.

I'm sure you meant the St Mary side, not York, I get those mixed up too. The black pipe will be covered with fancy shmancy stainless steel covers at the end. Super heavy duty design, I bet you can't even drive a truck through those
Garry side is getting done as well but for some reason the Smith side is being left as is this year.

Yes. St. Mary. Glad they will be covered. Should look nicer until the snow plows get a hold of them.

I believe I shall now make the phrase "Any word on what is now, what?" part of my common usage. Brilliant!
