what on earth are those things infront of the concert hall

and interesting the barieres can be opened up easly...

It was mentioned in an article last week (CBC site?) that the sections of the barriers that have grates overtop of them can easily be removed by a crane.

Anyone want to start a Go Fund Me for a little middle of the night adventure/experiment?

I love that pre-concourse P&M shot. As much as I like 201 Portage, I wish it could have been built a few feet to the north so the buildings that were on the site before could have remained. What a loss.

That aerial is really interesting too... looking closely at the Exchange District, it's kind of reassuring that not too many buildings have been lost over the years. There are very few buildings that are conspicuous by their absence now... the only one that really jumps out at me is the tallish warehouse at Bannatyne and Dagmar which was obviously demolished some years ago. Many of the other demolitions were at least to make way for new buildings which takes the sting out somewhat.

Even though it's 1979 in that P&M shot, the CN Telecommunications office (in its glorious quasi-Bauhaus style) makes it seem so old timey.

"Let's go to the CN Telecommunications building so we can send this telegram to the USSR!"

What building was that? Looks fairly significant - I count 8 floors.

There is something about the large rooftop and facade-mounted signs, small buildings, overhead power lines, etc that elicits feelings of bliss. I want to be there.

Good point. Why is it that small commercial buildings never get built downtown anymore? They do so much for the streetscape and add so much more than the monolithic block-long developments do, yet the only one I can think of that was built in the last 20 years is the Maxim Bakery in Chinatown. That's it.

The small buildings in front of the concert hall were some kind of pre-fab portable buildings. I think that the two that were there were 'promos' by the company that made them.

I thought it still was. I remember being 14-15 with me dad and seeing them build over / around it. But didn't know if I was just dreaming that up lol

That much taken off ? I just thought they changed the outer skin on that building to match the rest of the project that was being build new. I know that's one of the major interconnection hubs for telecommunications / internet in Manitoba. Because of that building (and MTS Portage Ave east) there are a large number of other communication companies in a few block range

the grain exchange is where the hub is where u want to be to hook into the various networks or if u can the fibor shack by the rail line near the train station

I remember that well. I was 17 and used to eat at Mr. Submarine just to the right of that picture on Main St. I worked at Miller's Hatchery up the street where the Humphrey Hotel now stands:
