I've seen this rendering of the new spire on SSC (the one on the right) but I have't found the full rendering posted anywhere. Does anyone have it?

The original chosen design was a nod of solidarity with the statue of liberty. The official first design shown above is an unfortunate "screw you!" to the statue of liberty. The last design is a "screw this. We just don't give a fk"

Thumbs down

The ring looks ridiculous now too--I didn't realize that they simplified it!

Thanks...I went to the main thread and read pages on this. It's painful to sort through the babble over there, especially people asking questions that have already been well explained, while others are talking about their dreams, discussing politics, etc., etc.

Spires can't be removed.
Antenna's can.
Since they don't plan to remove it, it's a spire. it may not look like one, but it is.
It's hideous.

the spire would have looked fine is it wasn't for those ugly ass rings and if it was painted white. Like Trump Chicago's spire just taller.

A spire is an integral part of the architectural design of the building, an antenna is not. See: Sears Tower, John Hancock, One Shell Plaza

However, there is of course the politicking to make an antenna count as part of the official height. See: Bank of America (total bullshit, but for some reason it counts).

Simply because the broadcast antenna on top of the new WTC isn't intended to be removed, does NOT make it a spire. It's just an antenna, and thus doesn't count. Otherwise you have to start counting all of those others as well. After all, if the broadcast technology changes, the antenna might be shortened or lengthened depending on need. That's not an architectural change, it's a functional and thus non-integral design change.

NOT a spire.

I'm thinking it's probably going to be more silver in color. I think it looks more rustic in that image because it's set at sunset. It will be interesting to see what it will look like at night lit up with the LED lights.

If it broadcasts or receives, it's an antenna; if it is only there for looks and does nothing else, it's a spire. WTC1 will have an antenna, which is not counted toward the building's height.

I was never a fan of this building even with the old spire. To me it looks like they were planning on building a megatall structure and they got up to like the 80the floor and then said "oops, we ran out of money"... "just stop construction and put a spire on top." Now that last line can be changed to "put a cheap, silly-looking spire on top." They really dropped the ball on this building. I say that because it could have made a huge statement to the rest of the World. Instead the only saving grace for this building, to me, is it's height.

I actually prefer Tower 2 much more and wish it was the center piece of the WTC complex. (although much taller than it's slated for). Also,Tower 3's design doesn't even fit in with the other 2 buildings and would have benefited if it were a stand alone building closer to Central Park. Tower 4 is.... ummmm... let's just say it looks like it was a toss in for the renderings and then they realized "Damn, they actually want a 4th building... let's just go with it."

Not trying to be a buzz kill, but I love the NY skyline and I think NYC and the WTC deserve better.
