Gov. Moore announces plan to bring back Baltimore transit project

By Brian Witte
Associated Press
15 June 2023

"ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore emphatically pledged Thursday to get an east-west transit project back on track in Baltimore, nearly eight years after his predecessor pulled the plug on the Red Line.

Moore, who campaigned on restarting the project to help better connect the city's residents to jobs, made the announcement during a news conference at a MARC train station in west Baltimore with federal, state and local officials.

“To everyone who’s out there who’s been waiting and waiting, I say to you this: This is going to happen," Moore said..."

Even a remote chance this could be a Metro Subway line instead of LRT? The downtown tunnel is such an investment to only be used by one line. The original rapid rail plan envisioned 6 lines passing through a central loop.

"About 200 apartments, mostly one-bedroom units and some two-bedroom units, with about 9,000 square feet of amenity space and terraces and one parking space per unit.
About 140,000 square feet of office space in a six-level building, with five levels of offices over one level of retail space. There would be one parking space for every 800 square feet of office space.

About 50,000 square feet of ground-level retail space, in both the new and recycled buildings.

A six-level parking garage with space for about 470 cars and 47 bikes, “wrapped” by the residential and office buildings. The garage would be accessible from both 28th and 29th streets."

This looks great. With this, the modernization and expansion of Penn Station, and the proposed Red line, there are exciting things proposed and happening in Baltimore.

Agreed that looks great! Love the stepping, curved terraces on the shorter building. Almost like a highrise ampitheater. Very unique!

MDOT MTA releases technical analysis for six Preliminary Alternatives maps for Red Line project
Results of the technical analysis support the need for premium transit to improve mobility and access along the east-west corridor.

Mass Transit
Nov. 2, 2023

"The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) has released the technical analysis associated with six Preliminary Alternatives maps made public in late September for the Red Line transit route in Baltimore. Results of the technical analysis support the need for premium transit to improve mobility and access along the east-west corridor.

“The Red Line will have a dramatic, positive impact on communities all along the east-west corridor, and it’s imperative we share ideas and information with residents, officials and stakeholders every step of the way,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “Working together, we can make the Red Line a crown jewel of Maryland’s world-class transportation network. I strongly encourage everyone to participate in making that vision a reality.”

Results of the technical analysis highlight the purpose and need for the project and are organized into a series of “measures of effectiveness” based on topics such as ridership, access, travel time, reliability, cost, time to implement and more. The measures enable the public to evaluate and compare the six proposed alternative maps with respect to mode choice – light rail or bus rapid transit (BRT) – as well as tunneling components and alignment. The measures were developed with feedback from stakeholders and the public during open houses and other public engagement activities held during the summer..."

Thank you for posting these photos. It is nice to see all the development.

This article in the NYT about Baltimore is interesting (and sad). It is great to see all this development but Baltimore still has a long ways to go.

I am in no way discounting the very serious problem of fentanyl plaguing cities like Baltimore. It does seem though that anytime something remotely positive about progress in Baltimore is mentioned it’s immediately countered by how horrible it is too.

I like Baltimore but, unfortunately, I think that is because Baltimore has more challenges than most cities.

I mean all cities have their issues/challenges, Baltimore's are just more "in your face" which is easier for the media to run with and because it's not a small city, it's a substantially heavier lift to "move the needle" in any one direction in the eyes of the public. Changing the status quo of old city isn't like flicking a on/off light switch, it takes time. It took DC almost 3 decades to shake the "Murder Capital" image.

That being said, more projects U/C

Roslyn and Leonard Stoler Center for Advanced Medicine
https://app.oxblue.com/cameras/d6368...erconstruction

The Anne

The Whitney

Flats At Markley

Theres a few more that have broken ground but aren't vertical yet nor is there enough space to post all the vacant rowhome restorations/renovations going on in the city. The city actually had net positive occupied housing because it's been cranking out 3000-4000 units per year for the last few consecutive years.

Theres a good deal more proposed that I'd have to dig for renders.
