At the meeting, Sujan Rao, Port department assistant executive engineer, said that Rs 25 crore will be released by the Centre and Rs 40 crore will be released by state government. “The coastal berth will be 350-metre-long and would handle cargo from Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The new berth will have double the cargo-handling capacity of the old port. A minimum of 15 houses would be demolished in order to construct the coastal berth,” he said.

“The dredging work proposed involves the creation of an 80-metre channel with a seven-metre draft, to facilitate the entry of heavy vessels to the old port. At present, the depth of the draft at the old port is 3.5 metre. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 29 crore, which will be shared equally by the state and Centre,” he added.

During a recent chat with reporters, NMPT chairman A.V. Ramana said the port, which already has three gates, has proposed to have a fourth gate exclusively for visitors arriving by cruise vessels. This gate will be connected by a separate road for tourist vehicles which take and drop back tourists arriving by ships. Hence, there will be no interference from the regular traffic of the port. “We hope to have this in about three years,” he said.

Mr. Ramana said he has asked the Dakshina Kannada district administration to start heli-tourism from the city by which cruise visitors can be taken quickly to important places such as Kukke Subrahmanya, Mookambika temple and Sringeri Sharada Peetham.

However, stakeholders interested in the event is not only be limited to Mangaluru and Karnataka region but confirmations have come from places such as Goa, Mumbai, Gujarat, Kerala, Chennai and Delhi as well.

Whether the Multimodal Logistics plan includes seamless connectivity from 'National Waterways' to Multimodal Logistics Park so that boats/barges will not face much problems to reach logistics park? - 1 2 3 4. Whether there is any plan (Karnataka Maritime Board?) to extend 'National Waterway 3' under construction in Kerala through Karnataka to Goa and furher? Let us hope that proposed new bridges across Gurupura river (& other rivers also) allow seamless movement of barges under them.

Looking at current cyclonic scenario I doubt there is any scope for highspeed boats which I was proposing earlier.
