Downtown Parking Study
March 25, 2008
St. John's City Council is going to do a detailed downtown parking study. The terms of reference were approved yesterday. The study will cost an estimated $100,000, a price that will be cost-shared with the Downtown Development Commission. Councillor Shannie Duff says the study will help the city with future downtown development. Councillor Wally Collins suggested making parking garages priority for big developments. Duff says forcing people to build parking garages will just mean fewer developments in the downtown. Councillor Frank Galgay looks forward to seeing the findings, including on the residential side of things.

There are at present two large multi-level parking garages in downtown St. John's, but not a great deal of off-street surface parking.
Some new developments may take away existing public parking, but should provide parking for it's own employees and customers.
Is there a parking shortage at present, and will it get worse?
