Ontario's hydro oligopoly is also in a lot of debt, most of our hydro bills (something like 60% of the bill) is debt recovery and transmission costs. (Apparently it costs 40 dollars a month to send electricity down a wire to my home, from the power plant 2 miles away.) Doesn't help that each of the five companies has a CEO making about two million dollars a year, plus bonuses. The city owned hydro distributor is pretty good at reducing the cost a bit, though--I'd be paying close to double if I lived in the bush.
Whatever you do, don't do whatever we did.
