House guarded after beating in downtown St. John's

Police secured a crime scene Wednesday night as investigators collected evidence at a downtown St. John's home where a man was beaten.

A 46-year-old man was listed in serious condition after what was described as a vicious beating Wednesday morning at a home on Tessier Place, near St. John's city hall.

One man attacked another in the house, which neighbours say is notorious for illegal drug activity.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has not yet made any arrests in the case, but investigators were working inside and outside the home

Fumbled cash register precedes thief's arrest

Police in the St. John's area dealt with two store robberies on Wednesday evening, including one in which a thief dropped the cash register he had just stolen.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said a man robbed Mae's Variety at knifepoint in the Foxtrap area of Conception Bay South around 8 p.m.

The robbery went awry, though, when the man dropped the cash register while trying to get it out of the store.

Without any cash, the thief then left the scene on a bicycle, but did not get far. A police officer had been parked across the street, and the RNC cordoned off the area.

Police flushed him out of his hiding spot, and although he fled on foot, police chased him down and arrested him. He faces charges of armed robbery and breaching the terms of court orders.

Meanwhile, police were not so lucky in finding the thief who held up a drug store earlier on Wednesday evening in the northeast end of St. John's.

The thief held up the Family Drug Mart on Portugal Cove Road just before 7 p.m.

The thief demanded narcotics, although RNC say officers are still trying to determine what he got away with.

No obvious weapon was seen, and no one was injured in the confrontation.

The man disguised himself with both a hoodie and a pillowcase he put over his head.
