In August Tompkins County residents will start hearing about the new "development focus areas" proposed by the county planning department. The 21 "nodes" are distributed through each of the nine towns in the county with the city itself included. The county will be trying to get two-thirds of all new housing to be built in these areas.
"We'll start meeting with local planning boards," said Joan Jurkowich, the deputy commissioner of the planning for the county, "and start that conversation, then go to the general public." She said that in public meetings that took place during the development of the report about to be released, there had been good attendance by local board members, but few members of the public had been present. ...........
