De-Amalgamation of Winnipeg
What could be the possible advantages and disadvantages of a
de-amalgamated Winnipeg?
Population of former municipalities currently in Winnipeg (1971, 2016, % change):
- Old Winnipeg 246,246 to 218,525 -11.3%
- Fort Garry 26,127 to 76,205 +191.7%
- St. Vital 32,963 to 69,027 +109.4%
- St. James 71,431 to 63,061 -11.7%
- St. Boniface 46,714 to 59,823 +28.1%
- North Kildonan 17,713 to 48,987 +176.6%
- Old Kildonan 1,984 to 44,420 +2138.9%
- Transcona 22,506 to 32,352 +43.7%
- East Kildonan 30,152 to 26,623 -11.7%
- Charleswood 12,180 to 25,347 +108.1%
- West Kildonan 23,959 to 22,391 -6.5%
- Tuxedo 3,258 to 18,483 +467.3%
Total 535,233 to 705,244 +31.8%
Census tracts in Winnipeg follow the boundaries of these former municipalities, which is how these numbers were determined.
