Putting aside the fact this narrative is all wrong, voting for Dotard has zero to do with Conservatism. He's a populist reactionary, not a Conservative. Conservatives are for preserving the status quo, fiscal discipline, applying traditional cultural norms, etc.
Also, I have no idea what you mean by "insular".
