Otis to feature super double-deck elevators in world’s tallest building, Shanghai World Financial Center

Dec. 20, 2004
Otis Elevator Company has been awarded a contract to install 64 elevators and escalators that will transport passengers throughout the Shanghai World Financial Center complex, home to the highest outdoor observation deck in the world.

The Shanghai World Financial Center will be built in the Pudong district of Shanghai, which the Chinese government has identified as a high priority area for international banking and commercial interests.

“The construction of the Shanghai World Financial Center is yet another example of China’s impressive and rapidly growing infrastructure, and Otis is proud to be a partner in this development,” said Ari Bousbib, Otis Elevator Company president. “We appreciate our customer’s confidence in Otis’ advanced super double-deck technology. This is a landmark win for our organization in China.”

With 101 floors, the skyscraper will house office space, an approximately 170-room six-star hotel and an observation deck. Once completed, the Shanghai World Financial Center is expected to be the tallest building in the world.

The developer of the project is Mori Building Corporation Group. Construction will be undertaken by a joint venture of China State Construction and Engineering Corporation and Shanghai Construction General Company. Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), a world-renowned architectural firm specializing in high-rise buildings, designed Shanghai World Financial Center. The project is scheduled for completion in 2007.

Otis will install 31 elevators and 33 escalators. Sixteen of the 31 elevators will be super double-deck elevators, the same type Otis developed – the first of its kind in the world – for the Mori Building Corporation’s Roppongi Hills complex, a Tokyo landmark. These super double-deck elevators allow a larger number of passengers to be transported to their destinations at the same time while providing greater space efficiency for the customer’s building. Most notably, the super double-deck system is designed to service floors with varying floor-to-floor heights.

The contract also includes six double-deck elevators, two of which will shuttle passengers from the ground to the observation lobby, and seven machine-roomless Gen2™ elevators, among others. Otis is the sole escalator provider for the building.

Otis Elevator Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), is the world's largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators, shuttle systems and moving walkways. With headquarters in Farmington, Connecticut, Otis employs 60,000 people, offers products and services in more than 200 countries and territories and maintains more than 1.4 million elevators and escalators worldwide.
