YIMBY’s first look at renderings for 42 Trinity Place got us wondering: Where does this new supertall building lie in the battle to be NYC’s most massive residence?

42 Trinity Place has come a long way since 2011. As the site of the old Syms store, it was once described as “comically depressing.” Now, new renderings show the building rising 80 stories and 1,015 feet. Theoretically, the site and plans could accommodate an even taller building. With Trinity Church releasing 600,000 square feet of extra air rights, the Financial District may end up with another building in excess of one million square feet.

This potential size for the new 42 Trinity Place is larger than any other primarily residential supertall building in development, except for Nordstrom Tower at 217 West 57th Street. 42 Trinity Place will be mixed-use, with current plans showing a two-story retail space, three floors for the Department of Education, 31 floors of hotel, and all higher floors residential. Trinity Place Holdings is the prospective developer.

Let’s take a look at 42 Trinity Place compared to its NYC supertall, residential cousins. This top 10 list includes residential buildings proposed, under construction and recently completed.
