I'll throw St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada) into the mix. Internationally its undoubtedly a lesser-known city. With an Urban population of 165,346 (Metro 196,966) it stands as the oldest English-founded city in North America.

I'd also argue its one of the most unique and colorful.

This panorama really doesn't do the city's colorfulness justice though, and in fact I'd probably argue that the view from the harbour is one of the worst ways to view the city. I suggest anyone interested check out Lyndon Keating's page of photos:

With a few new developments having begun this year, and more steps being taken for an improved downtown, St. John's is meeting some of its untapped potential.
