Winnipeg doesn't make the cut for Global Monopoly

Winnipeg didn’t pass go, will not collect $200 and won’t be a space on the new Global Monopoly board.

Hasbro Canada announced today the names of the 22 international cities chosen for the new game board through a worldwide vote earlier this year.

But sadly, Hasbro Canada spokeswoman Marisa Pedatella said while Winnipeg was close it ultimately didn’t make the cut.

“Through the voting Winnipeg was very, very high - they were in the Top 5 in the wild card vote,” Pedatella said.

“But when it came down to the two wild card spots on the board, Taipei and Gdynia were there. Winnipeg held strong the entire vote - we don’t have the stats so we don’t know where Winnipeg’s ranking is.”

Before voting became secret at the end of February, Winnipeg was in fifth place, with 8.1 per cent, in the Top Two wild card voting. At that point, Quebec City was leading with 15 per cent, followed by eventual wild card board winners Taipei, with 12.3 per cent, and Gdynia at 10.2 per cent.

But Pedatella said Winnipeggers - and Canadians - can celebrate because Canada is one of only two countries in the world that have three cities on the new board.

Montreal won the top spot - meaning it slips into the spot normally taken by Boardwalk - while Vancouver is in the New York Avenue space and Toronto is in the Virginia Avenue position.
