20km north of Nizwa is Tanuf, a ruined mud-brick town along a slope. The scenery along the way is quite nice with a surprising amount of greenery.
To access the ruins, there is a parking lot next to the mosque and you are free to explore. There are no barriers anywhere and be sure to climb up the hill for a view of the site and the wadi behind it.
