BERLINER UNTERWELTEN EV

It is our pleasure to inform you here about our various activities. What we do is to explore and to explain to the public Berlin's Urban History and Architecture from an unconventional perspective. Besides, we have worked over the past few years on the establishment of a permanent exhibition – a Berlin Underworlds Museum. The results are – in our view at least – quite presentable. Thus, we are hoping to see you soon within our facilities. Climb down with us into the fascinating subterranean world of Berlin!

Welcome to the website of Berliner Unterwelten e.V.
(Berlin Underworlds' Association – Registered Society)

On the occasion of the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany, we focus here our interest on the varied history of Berlin's Olympic Stadium, the place of the final match. We draw the attention to many aspects that are not mentioned in many of the publications that have been published in the days shortly before this big football tournament. Perhaps this concealment is due to a certain lack of knowledge, maybe the blank spots have been left behind intentionally. Please follow us on an exciting excursion into the hidden catacombs beneath the Olympic Stadium!

We also want to inform you here about our various activities. It is our aim to impart Urban History of a big city from an unconventional perspective. In addition, we would like to present our permanent exhibition – the Berlin Underworlds' Museum.

“They tore up the cobblestones at the Rosenthaler Platz. So, between others, he walked on wooden boards. Look, they are building the underground railway.”

What the writer Alfred Doeblin thus described in his famous novel “Berlin Alexanderplatz” was just one of many construction sites in the city. The engineers often dug very deep into the soil of Berlin and the subway system is only a part of its subterranean architecture. Many other objects are to b found in Berlin's sandy underground. Cemeteries, secret air raid shelters, sewers and even an aircraft factory were built under the surface of the city. A lot of these structures still exist nowadays.

In the autumn of 1997, a few enthusiasts got together in order to explore this subterranean world. The organization they founded, the “Berlin Underworlds' Association”, locates and documents such hidden installations, making some of them accessible to the public. Furthermore, it uses these sites for cultural purposes (such as exhibitions, theatre performances and concerts). The organization has already discovered numerous forgotten subterranean structures – but many other secrets are still to be discovered down there. Please come and climb with us down into the hidden secrets of Berlin's Underground. We are looking forward to see you!
