Yea this is where Google’s terrain map doesn’t do justice, unfortunately.

I did go through the Malahat once back in grade 11 (which is 8 years ago!). All I remember is the prolonged 2-lane section, U-turn spots, that 90-degree turn south of Mill Bay with mountain on one side and river on the other, lots of lights in the wilderness afterward, grain trains in Duncan, and this mall in Nanaimo where I could see the Inland Island Highway high up there.

Maybe next time I visit Vancity again, I’ll rent a car so I can check out all the places that I couldn’t reach by bus.
