Fantastic interview with Lightfoot. Feeling very good that I voted for her now. Some highlights from the interview:

Lightfoot ruled out a “LaSalle Street” tax on financial transactions that she said would just drive CME and other trading firms out of town, a return of the employer head tax, or a commuter tax on suburban residents who work in the city. The latter would end up subjecting Chicagoans who work out of town to higher taxes, she said. She also said she opposes a city income tax, and said any possible hike in the property tax would have to wait for Fritz Kaegi, the new county assessor, to implement his reform plans.

In other points of interest, Lightfoot:

Opposes rent control. The solution to Chicago’s big shortage of affordable housing is to build more units for low-income people in more neighborhoods, and imposing rent control would not help with that, she said.

Strongly suggested that newly hired city workers would have to get reduced pensions, with benefits below even the levels already imposed on workers hired after Jan. 1, 2011. But Lightfoot said she would not move them to a 401(k)-style program, saying that would bankrupt the current pension system, which counts on income from new workers.
