Coney Island's Parachute Jump gets $2 million upgrade and 8,000 LED lights
The new LED lighting scheme on Coney Island's tallest structure will be programmable with funky rhythmic displays for shows and concerts. The increased number of lights is a dramatic jump from the 450 that were installed throughout and the ride will reportedly be so bright it can be seen from space.

Say hello to the souped-up version of Brooklyn’s Eiffel Tower.

On the first day of summer, outgoing Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Coney Island amusement park officials will toss the switch on a makeover of the iconic Parachute Jump, which is so bright it can be seen from space. It brings the bling back to Coney Island,” said Markowitz, who has long wanted to pimp the ride.

Zamperla USA — the amusement area’s main ride operator — has installed and will maintain the $2 million space-age LED lighting scheme on Coney’s tallest structure. The 8,000 colored lights — up from the 450 lights in the old, lackluster design — will be programmable with funky rhythmic displays for shows and concerts.

The Parachute Jump was built for the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens and was moved to Coney Island in 1941. It stopped operating in 1968.
