More student housing planned for downtown

Quote:
A pending land sale could lead to more housing options for college students wanting to live downtown.

City Council on Thursday unanimously approved the sale of a vacant lot near the University of Texas at San Antonio's downtown campus to a developer looking to build a mixed-use project that will include about 70 residential units.

The lot, in the 700 block of South Frio Street, was sold to Elmer's Icehouse LLC, which owns other adjacent properties, for $20,000.

Developer Michael Spencer plans a three-story building for the property. The ground floor will have about 21,000 square feet of space for retail. The top two floors will incorporate 30 to 40 apartments at about 500 square feet each. Pricing for those units will be about $1 per square foot.

Construction is expected to start within eight months.
