1865 Broadway’s Brutalist-Inspired Facade Reaches Its Rooftop On The Upper West Side Of Manhattan

Quote:
The latest Upper West Side tower designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill is almost complete. It has been ten months since the 33-story residential building at 1865 Broadway topped out, and now, the façade has finally reached the building’s rooftop.

AvalonBay Communities purchased the site in 2015 for $300 million from the American Bible Society. The sale helped fund the non-profit’s plan to move to Philadelphia. While the development required demolition of a bold brutalist building also designed by SOM, an anonymous source shared with YIMBY in 2015 that the new tower’s facade would be inspired by Brutalist pioneer I.M. Pei’s Turtle Bay Towers. However, the façade is not totally symmetrical like Pei’s buildings, as it is stratified to accommodate different use classes.

A four-story retail base will anchor the 416-foot tall structure, with two below ground and two above ground floors yielding a total of 34,000 square feet.

Completion and move-ins are expected by 2019. Sales have not yet been announced.
