Arrowdale golf course redevelopment
Arrowdale Golf Course will be sold
Michelle Ruby | Brantford Expositor Published on: December 17, 2019 Arrowdale Golf Course will be sold. In an 8-3 vote on Tuesday, city council approved a motion to sell the 47-acre property and use the proceeds to create affordable housing in the city. Arrowdale supporters who packed the council chamber and other areas of city hall left the building angry. “It’s disgraceful,” said an emotional Kailee Poisson after the vote. “We had hundreds of people here today and they didn’t listen to a single word.” Sixteen delegations, most of them opposed to the sale of Arrowdale, spoke at the meeting. Council agreed to use 15 acres of the golf course land for a park and open green space. They also agreed to keep the course open for the 2020 golf season. Arrowdale sold? Bylaw approving sale of golf course on council agenda for Tuesday Vincent Ball | Brantford Expositor Published on: August 23, 2020 City councillors are expected to approve the sale of Arrowdale Golf Course for $14 million at a meeting Tuesday. Councillors discussed the sale of 282 Stanley Street, known as Arrowdale Golf Course, at an in-camera meeting last week. The sale is now on the agenda for Tuesday’s council meeting. According to information contained in the agenda package, the course is being sold to a numbered Ontario company for $14 million. A bylaw to confirm the sale has been prepared for council’s consideration on Tuesday as well. .... However, Davis and others on council have said the sale of Arrowdale will generate much-needed funds to help build affordable housing in the community. Davis has said repeatedly that the city is facing an affordable housing crisis and can’t wait for the provincial and federal governments to come up with solutions. The affordable housing crisis became more apparent last summer and fall when encampments started popping up in various areas of the community including one behind the Brantford and District Labour Centre. The city also found itself in a situation in which people in need of emergency housing over the winter were being turned away from emergency shelters that were already filled. The problem forced the city to open up a third shelter for homeless people in the former police station on Greenwich Street. |

Colborne and Iroquois redevelopment | 9 and 5 floors
Brantford's biggest eyesore is being redeveloped!
https://smartcdn.prod.postmedia.digi...pg&w=840&h=630 Housing planned for Colborne Street greyfield site Michelle Ruby Published on: January 15, 2020 A concrete wasteland that has been an eyesore in Ward 5 for more than a decade is headed for a transformation. City councillors unanimously supported this week applications for official plan and zoning amendments as the first step toward a housing project that will eventually allow about 1,000 people to live on the former Canadian Tire property on Colborne Street East. Cachet Developments is proposing a diverse mixture of housing for the 11-acre property, including nine- and five-storey apartment buildings facing Colborne, two mixed-use townhouse blocks and a mix of stacked and back-to-back townhouse units, including parking, landscaped areas and a large central amenity area. The five-storey building will have 86 units and be located in the northwest corner of the site. The nine-storey building will have 124 units and be located in the northeast corner. The 16 mixed-use townhouse units each will have a ground-floor commercial unit with a residential unit above. It will be possible for the owner of the residential unit to own and operate a small business below it. The mixed-use units will be located in two separate townhouse blocks situated along an internal private road extending from Colborne Street, which will be developed with a “main street” design and promenade. Proposed toward the rear of the property are 142 townhouses, consisting of 92 stacked units and 50 back-to-back units. .... |

Great to see Brantford hitting its stride.
Would be curious to hear from a local; is this growth tied to Toronto expats with an easy occasional commute to the city, or maybe it's the university driving this? And on a personal note from my occasional visits to Brantford, there is a brilliant little sub shop just east of the core that has a veritable treasure trove of Leafs historical décor, I hope it survives the pandemic. Well on Brantford! |

150 units of affordable housing coming to the Terrace Hill neighbourhood
"Partnering with Ian Jones of BGI Development Group in Toronto, Freedom House has signed a contract to purchase a privately owned five-acre parcel of land on which they plan to build about 150 units of affordable housing. In addition, a “flex-space” building would be constructed for use by the church for worship and community outreach, but also would be available for the community and residents of the complex. The parcel of land extends from 160 Charing Cross St., formerly occupied by the Brantford City Soccer Club, eastward to Cloverdale Avenue. A portion of vacant land at the end of Cloverdale, behind the businesses, is the location where the proposed construction would take place." https://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/ne...rdable-housing |
