Brazilian investors set to bring famed South American hotel brand, condos to crowded 57th St.
The Fasano family already operates a hotel and restaurant empire with outposts in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

Midtown is about to get a little bit more Rio.

A group of Brazilian investors is planning to bring another luxury high-rise tower comprising a hotel and condos to the already crowded 57th St. billionaire's row.

The group, which includes construction company JHSF Participacoes S.A. and the first family of Brazilian cuisine, the Fasano family, wants to bring a Fasano-branded hotel to a vacant lot at 16 W. 57th St. with condos on top, a spokesperson for the investors told the Daily News exclusively.

The Fasano family already operates a hotel and restaurant empire spanning São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Punta del Este, Uruguay.

And they're not planning to cut corners when it comes to their New York tower. Sergio Millerman, the group's representative in the city, said the investors are in talks to have starchitect Rafael Vinoly design the building.

"Fasano is probably the most important restaurateur in Brazil," Millerman said. "This is going to be extremely, extremely elegant."

The investors bought the development site for $95 million last month from Extell Development, the company behind Midtown's most luxurious condo tower at 157 W. 57th St.
The dimensions of the new building have not yet been decided but the site allows for a more than 100,000-square-foot tower.

Extell sells site that triggered legal tangle with Sheldon Solow
Firm unloads hotly contested property on West 57th Street for $95M

Extell Development’s Gary Barnett sold off the Midtown development site at the center of the firm’s lawsuit with landlord Sheldon Solow.

The five-story building at 16-18 West 57th Street traded for $95 million, according to public records. The property has 24,000 square feet and comes with 75,000 square feet of buildable air rights.

Extell put the vacant building on the market last year, after buying the five-story property for $80 million in 2011 from Ilan Bracha, founder of Keller Williams NYC, and Bracha’s development partner Haim Binstock. At the time, Extell outbid Solow for the property in what some said was an attempt to prevent Solow from assembling a large development site while he was developing One57, Extell’s luxury condo tower at 157 West 57th Street.

Solow owns 10-14 West 57th Street and 20-22 West 57th Street, as well as an office building at 9 West 57th Street.

This is not what will get built, but just some earlier info about the site...

Situated steps from the intersection of 57th Street and 5th Avenue, 16-18 West 57th Street is located in the world’s premier high-end retail location, often referred to as the “crossroads of luxury,”due to its four corner anchors: Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis Vuitton and Bulgari.

The 57th Street corridor has long been a magnet for the world’s finest retail, office, and residential uses, and is considered one of New York City’s most prime locations

Let's hope we get something decent. Looks like this would be competition for 31 W. 57th and the Park Lane in the luxury dept. Other current developments are too far ahead.
Meanwhile, Solow sold of the Con Ed site. Let's see if the footprint can be expanded here.

Okay...stupid question looking at the bird's eye shot.

If the addy's West 57th, what's the plot doing on the other side of the street?

I mean...Solow Tower used to be called 9 West 57th. Is not her 57th-facing profile west-bound?

This should be east, no?

JSsocal Sep 11, 2014 3:30 PM

Got your cardinals mixed up, these buildings are on the North (9 west 57th), and South (16 west 57th) side of the street. 5th Avenue is the divider between west and east streets in manhattan. The lower the number, the closer to 5th avenue.

If they want any park views here, it's going to have to be very tall to get over the Solow building.

I don't know if they're gonna go for any park views, but with Rafael Vinoly (the new king of the slender tower), you never know. It wouldn't surprise me. Everyone wants to maximize their development site to fullest potential, and that certainly would do it. Even at 100,000 sf, it's roughly the size of the Steinway addition.

57th Street Is About To Get Yet Another Hotel-Condo Tower

Brace yourselves, folks: another condo-hotel tower is going to rise on Billionaires Row. Only yesterday it was revealed that Extell sold the undeveloped lot at 16 West 57th Street near Fifth Avenue for $95 million. Turns out the buyers are an aggregate of Brazilian developers who will bring their vision of a hotel-condo building to the site—and theirs will be not just any hotel-condo building. This hotel-condo building may, just may be designed by Rafael Viñoly and will carry the Fasano family brand, who NYDN refers to as "the first family of Brazilian cuisine." The Fasanos have already established a ritzy restaurant and hotel empire across Brazil and other locales, so it's safe to assume that the establishment will be as "extremely, extremely elegant" as it's already being billed. Sounds like that new "seven-star hotel" coming to the nearby former Rizzoli Bookstore site has some stiff (and elegant) competition.

Id be more excited if the Gene Kaufman of slender condos wasn't the architect. Another tall skinny box with little architectural merit is on its way.

Vinoly has nothing to do with Gene Kaufman, so no. And we don't even have a design yet.

And none of the new 57th street towers lack architectural merit. They're all pretty strong, so far, at least.

JR Ewing Jun 23, 2015 12:04 PM

How do you know it's a Vinoly tower?

That was the rumor.

We don't know for sure, but previous news reports indicated that the Brazilian developers were considering Vinoly (who is Uruguayan and trained in Argentina, so possibly a South American connection).

I think you missed the metaphor here.

The original post notwithstanding, I actually really like 432 Park. It's quite an elegant modern building.

It makes sense as that would not surprise me, however hope it will be another architect and I wouldn't mind if it will be a limestone type of tower to rise there just for more variety with all the B Row towers rising. Anyways, great to hear the Brazilians are making some moves.

I agree, I'd like to see Stern style towers rise in the Avenues and main streets.

For non-New Yorkers, the building covered in netting is 10 W 57th, and no demo permits have been filed for it. I believe that Solow owns it.

Fasano's project is at 16-18 next door. This ideally should have been combined with the American Cancer Society's former HQ directly behind it on W 56th. However, Solow owns that too, and supposedly, he doesn't want anything tall to rise to the south which would impede the southerly views of his crown jewel, 9 W 57th.

I'm sorry, there's nothing about that block (before or after One57) that average New Yorkers would go to.
