Vanoc unveils new graphic illustrations for 2010 Games
Vancouver Sun Published: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee unveiled its new graphic illustrations at a Board of Trade luncheon at Canada Place today. The illustrations -- which the design team said involved enough research to circumnavigate the globe four times -- will be featured on 2010 Olympic banners, signage, venues and merchandise. The illustrations are primarily blue, green and white in colour, and feature layers of illustrations. The aim was to highlight Vancouver's natural beauty, as well as its modern, urban side. The sports pictograms are more modern than those of Games past, designers said, reflecting the evolution of the sports. "We're very proud of them," said Vanoc spokeswoman Renee Smith-Valade. Canadian Olympians Amanda Overland (short track speed skating), Chris Wong (freestyle skiing), Anne-Marie Lefrançois (alpine skiing) and Paralympian Tyler Mosher (cross-country skiing) unveiled the pictograms and the series of sport illustrations. They were created in collaboration with illustrator Irene Jacobs of I'm JAC Design, and incorporate elements designed by Xwa lack tun, a Vancouver-based Aboriginal artist. "The pictograms and sport illustrations were inspired by modern sport photography, pop culture, fashion illustration and manga-style comics (a Japanese genre of comic books) to give athletes an heroic feel and a close-up view of their intensity and athleticism, while also serving as an inspiration to youth," Vanoc said in a release. Tomorrow, Vanoc will launch a refreshed website designed to offer an enhanced, in-depth and interactive experience for virtual visitors worldwide. |
a temporary placeholder website has been put up for the transition to the new site....

The previous waves, etc (i.e. on the banner that Mr X posted) were cleaner looking - without the "interior designer-ish" patterns and textures - so they seemed more "sporty".

Some of the weirdest sponsors in Olympic history....
Port of Vancouver makes deal with Vanoc Derrick Penner, Vancouver Sun Published: Monday, September 29, 2008 VANCOUVER - Port Metro Vancouver will offer the 2010 Winter Olympics access to its property and facilities around Canada Place to the value of at least $3 million, port officials said Monday as it was unveiled as an official Olympic sponsor. John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (Vanoc), said the agreement will give it key access to the roads, parkades and other access points that the port controls around the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, which will serve as the main press and broadcasting centre for the 2010 Games. "It is the space to get in and out," Furlong said, "[the sponsorship is] a whole bunch of things like that [which] make the logistical challenge of doing what we need to do dramatically easier." A total value of the sponsorship was not revealed, but the port joins the Vanoc's sponsorship program at the official supplier level, which requires a contribution between $3 million and $15 million. Vanoc has signed $735 million worth of domestic corporate sponsorships to date, leaving it $25 million to raise to reach its goal of $760 million in revenue from sponsorship. Schools should remain open for Olympics, Vancouver teachers' union says Vancouver Sun Published: Monday, September 29, 2008 VANCOUVER -- Schools should remain open during the 2010 Olympic Games, says the Vancouver Elementary School Teachers' Association (VESTA). In a release today, union president Glen Hansman said his members are opposed to public school closures because of the impact that would have on families. "Of major concern was the welfare of students and families in our inner-city schools, who would have little options during that time period should schools be closed," he says. "It is not realistic or fair to expect families to scramble to find child care during those two weeks." The Vancouver board of education has not yet made a decision on the issue. I'm not sure what their problem is, all they are doing is moving spring break a month earlier. |
Have a feeling the teachers union is playing political games again, there doesn't seem to be any other explanation. I mean if they were so concerned about the welfare of the parents in inner city schools, why have pro-d days and spring break at all. Just have a shorter school year and have the teachers attend training seminars in the summer.
Don't think we have any teachers on here. ;) |
LMAO! XD
Btw, TransLink has created a new section of the site for the 2010 games called "The Way to 2010" They also have a cool interactive map for all the venues... interesting that the dont' have 91 and 95 B-Line... I wonder what's going on with that now... |
i was thinking something small that is gold coloured with a picture of a loon in the middle. I think for heritage sake, we should have queen victoria on the opposite side.
i'm sure these meddles would be inexpensive to make (about a dollar Cdn) and everybody could have one (because everyone here is a winner!) i dunno. what do you think? |
i posted the last post in the wrong forum. how do i fix that?

A little bit of info regarding the live sites, some of it we knew already some is new. It's in a RFP from the city.
The plan will utilize a full city block off Georgia Street in the heart of Vancouver (the Georgia Street site of the former bus depot) and a prominent waterfront park (David Lam Park). The two sites are linked by an historical trail along Hamilton/Mainland streets through Yaletown. An additional link along Robson Street will connect the Live Site to the Provincial Olympic programming areas at Robson Square and BC Place, home of the Opening, Closing and nightly victory ceremonies. LiveCity Vancouver (LCV), sites will provide: • High-quality, secure, alcohol-free, family-friendly environment that showcases the arts, culture, entertainment and Olympic sponsors • Schedules and content built around Games-time events • Events that are open, accessible and free of charge • Planned on-screen programming on large LED screens showing Olympic and Paralympic events and track the progress of Canadian athletes • Live programming featuring the very best local, national and international performing artists, as well as special appearances by past and present Olympians, Paralympians and other special guests • Olympic and Paralympic sponsor showcase pavilions • Concessions for merchandise, food and beverage LCV programs and related materials will be presented in both official languages: English and French. LiveCity@Georgia will be open February 12 through 28th and again during the Paralympic Winter Games March 12th through 21st (27 days) operating 11am to 12 midnight daily. LiveCity @David Lam Park will be open February 12th through 28th (17 day) operating 11am to 11pm daily. The cultural entertainment programming for this two-site “Live Site” concept will be presented as a complement to the Cultural Olympiad, nightly Medals Ceremonies and will be developed in conjunction with VANOC and its partners including LiveSites in Whistler, Richmond, and Surrey. The stages at both LiveCity Vancouver sites will offer a unique opportunity to showcase the very best talent from Vancouver, British Columbia, and from across Canada. Large (47 square feet) screens will feature broadcasts of Games highlights, live airings of sold-out events, showcase digital media artworks and track the progress of Canadian athletes at the Games. The City is working with VANOC to site Official Olympic and Paralympic sponsors and government partners on the two LiveCity sites. Sponsor pavilions will provide an opportunity for sponsor activation within distinct temporary pavilions through public information, interactive displays and hosting functions. Pavilions will range in size from single story (1,000 square feet) to two-story (16,000 square feet) de-mountable structures. |

IOC to lose US health product firm as top sponsor: report
NEW YORK (AFP) — Johnson and Johnson, a US health care product manufacturer, has decided not to extend its worldwide Olympic sponsorship through to the 2012 London Olympics, SportsBusiness Journal reported Monday. Less than three years after announcing a partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and in the midst of a global economic crisis, Johnson and Johnson becomes the fourth partner to drop a top-level deal since last year. "We are not renewing that sponsorship to enable us to focus on other business priorities," Johnson and Johnson spokeswoman Lorie Gawreluk told the Journal in e-mail. "We are proud to have been a sponsor of the (IOC) and the Beijing Olympics, which was a success for the company." Johnson and Johnson might remain affiliated with the Olympic movement as a sponsor of the US Olympic Committee and other national organizing committees as well as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, sources told the newspaper. Other firms from the 2005-2008 period to discontinue The Olympic Partnership (TOP) elite-level sponsor deals include Kodak, ManuLife and Lenovo. The IOC replaced Lenovo with rival Acer, returned ManuLife's insurance category to national Olympic groups and added the digital camera services of Kodak to Panasonics sponsorship. "The TOP program receives a lot of interest from a number of corporations from around the world looking to partner with the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement," the Journal quoted an unnamed IOC spokesman as saying, adding that "Further announcements are expected to be made regarding new members" in 2009. While the IOC has nine partners for the 2009-2012 span and struck deals for more than the 886 billion dollars it received in the past quadrennial, it has yet to reach its goal of one billion dollars for the period. Johnson and Johnson's decision cost the IOC a renewal worth about 100 million dollars over the next four years. Additional sponsor level categories such as automotive and personal care products sponsorships are being explored by the IOC, the report said. The Journal said Johnson and Johnson officials spent 73 million dollars for the IOC deal for the Beijing Olympics but were frustrated by a lack of people around its pavilion in the Beijing Olympic Green area, where an area showcasing its products had smaller crowds than expected due to security issues. |
It's probably somewhere here (I'm too lazy to look), but when is the opening of the Speed Skating Oval again?

Interesting info from the CBC 2010 section....
- the original plan for ice hockey was to renovate the Pacific Coliseum and demolish the Agrodome for a new 6,000 seat arena, for $48-million - the luge track would be built at Grouse Mountain for $32-million (doesn't sound like they thought that one out considering the crowds you'd need to move up and down the mountain) - the Olympic Village at UBC Note: this was during the Arthur Griffths days, just before the turn of the new millennium. |

It's not bad but a little too generic in my mind. They could have at least had the Lions in there instead of what I assume is just an arbitrary mountain scene. The skyline would also have been nice. It's still a nice design but you could basically put any Winter Olympic city name in there and it would work.

I just found this interesting television rating graph. It would appear that the Winter Olympics are as or more popular with American viewers compared to the Summer Olympics. I'm a bit surprised.

From Business in Vancouver
VANOC is hoping the sponsorship bug can return to pre-recession levels and be contagious for the four parties in talks. Two of them are Concord Pacific and Canadian Metropolitan Properties, the Plaza of Nations’ owner. VANOC wants to use their northeast False Creek lands for storage, staging and logistics. VANOC will use Wesgroup’s East Fraserlands at the south foot of Boundary Road as a 480-bus depot. Sponsor Port Metro Vancouver’s property at the south foot of No. 8 Road in Richmond, near the HBC logistics warehouse, will be the 3,500-vehicle Games fleet compound. Sponsorship is $8.5 million shy of the $760 million goal for cash, goods and services. |
wow....VANOC probably broke the record for having the most sponsors for the Games. They even have Wonder Bread! WONDERBREAD!!!
|
:previous: I know about the WONDER BREAD sponsor...I just had Wonder Bread for my sandwich today!! Go Wonder Bread Go!!

I think it's being designed by Bombardier. |
^ yup, Bombardier is designing both the torch and cauldron.

As for the design of the torch...don't know yet...but we will know it soon because the torch relay starts this OCTOBER!!! |
According to today's 24 Hours, it's a sure thing that VANOC will cut out massively from the "Look of the Games" budget which decorates the city....a lot of that Olympic feel will be lost, e.g. Olympic rings on Lions Gate?
With that said, if the market improves in 6 months the budget could be restored. |
^^^^ That's a shame. Hopefully, whatever is cut, funding for high profile items such as Rings on bridges is maintained - they'll be visible from all over the city and will really resonate on TV.

CBC news posted a piece about the Olympic Fountain at David Lam Park, which will be used as a 20-storey projection screen during the Games. I'm not sure how to embed videos from news sites, so here is the link (should pop up in WMP):

Sounds cool to me. Thanks for the video, Locked In.
Is it just me or does it seem like the newscast is talking Shatner-esque in that video? |
As a treat, here's the banner that will not show up at SSC (because of added text and images policy), but I decided to share with everyone anyways.
