Pretty uninspired design. You can’t tell by the renderings, but the existing German school building is pretty great, though.

I heard they were considering a Kimpton brand.

I respectfully disagree. I actually find the design elegant and modern (with some hints of the mid-century modernism of HemisFair '68 from across the street).

I would much rather have this design vs. the beige faux stucco boxes with bad ornamentation so prevalent on the chain hotels.

The design is absolutely fantastic!!
I agree with you Montirob, it absolutely has mid century features as well!
Compliments the area well.
Love the view from the restaurant, which looks like "open air space"!:tup:
Once again, another awesome design and probably will be tweaked, of course!!!:tup::yes::cheers::tup::yes:

This project received initial approval today.

Plans for it have been revised and it will now be 10-stories.

When the Historic Design and Review Commission approved hotel developer White Lodging's plans for the boutique hotel at 431 S. Alamo Street in December 2019, it was presented as a nine-story, 275-room hotel.

It is now planned as a 10-story, 347-room boutique hotel with a rooftop bar and pool overlooking an unnamed street-level steakhouse, a White Lodging spokesperson tells MySA in an email statement.

"We expect to announce more details on this exciting project, including brand and design specifics, later this summer," the White Lodging representative says.

Better than a parking lot, but I still don't understand why so many buildings here go wide and short when this could have been cut in half and been a 20 story building.

Agreed, this project is the perfect example for why San Antonio lacks tall buildings. Developers choose to build low and wide instead of tall and slender. Very nice design but still disappointing.

Rynetwo Jun 26, 2022 2:29 PM

In this part of DT this design makes sense.

If it were next to the Weston tower I’d agree with criticism.

Fireoutofclay Jun 27, 2022 2:38 PM

Is there any mention of El Cuartel, which is located on what looks to be just north of the building location? I've always felt that, while somewhat underwhelming, the ruins should be protected. Last I heard it was on private property.

Commission approves plans for 10-story hotel and rehab of German School in La Villita

https://sanantonioreport.org/hdrc-10...ol-la-villita/

The Historic and Design Review Commission signaled its approval Wednesday for a planned 10-story boutique hotel and restaurant to be built in the La Villita Historic District.

In addition to constructing a new hotel, the investment group of Indiana-based hotel development firm White Lodging plans to rehabilitate the German-English School, building a connector between the old and new structures.

The commission gave conceptual approval in December 2019 to the project, described then as a nine-story hotel, despite historic preservationists’ concerns.

A representative of the Conservation Society of San Antonio said at the time that the organization felt the structure’s size and scale would be inappropriate for La Villita.

Kathy Krnavek, the Conservation Society board’s first vice president, repeated those concerns on Wednesday.

“The Conservation Society of San Antonio continues to disagree with the assertion that the massing of the new structure is appropriate for the block,” Krnavek said. “The high-rise section is significantly taller than all existing buildings, including the hotel on the south side of Arciniega [Street].

“Secondly, we recommend prioritizing the pedestrian experience for this section of the historic district, including maintenance of a strong pedestrian connection to the courtyard of the German-English school and reducing the automobile focus at the hotel entrance.”

The hotel site is a 1-acre parcel located at 423 S. Alamo St., currently used as a surface parking lot.

It is situated between the seven-story Marriott Plaza San Antonio hotel and the historic German-English School and directly across the street from Yanaguana Garden in Hemisfair.

Really digging the design and the buildings interaction with the street.

Apparently this is gonna be a Kimpton, so I wouldn't be too surprised if it's somewhat similar to Van Zandt in Austin. It'll be a nice addition to downtown for sure.

More renderings + Kimpton confirmed.

From SABJ

White Lodging has revealed more details about its planned 10-story hotel tower set for a site along South Alamo Street across from Hemisfair.

The hotel has a targeted opening in late 2024. White Lodging will team with San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants on the development.

Kimpton is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Luxury & Lifestyle Collection. The White Lodging project will be the only hotel in San Antonio flying the Kimpton flag.

“We’re looking forward to expanding our footprint in the Lone Star state,” Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants CEO Mike DeFrino said. “Our hotels in Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth perform incredibly well, and we believe that San Antonio will round out our Texas portfolio nicely.”

Love it. Gives me CDMX vibes for some reason, wouldn't look out of place in Polanco.
