I really like this one. The shape is wonderful, and the glass pattern goes perfectly with it. And I'm eager to see what the 'beach glass' panels look like on the garage once they're all installed.

J_M_Tungsten Apr 24, 2018 3:24 PM

The tower is excellent so far, but I’ll still wait on the garage to finish before stating a complete success.

maru2501 Apr 24, 2018 4:07 PM

lots of great looks from kennedy

^ Definitely helps draw the center of gravity further west when driving down the Kennedy. Can't wait until that stretch of highway is entirely canyon-ed... and while we are on the topic of pipe dreams, decked over with parkland as well :)

Loving the reflectivity. It's right up there with 444 Lake.

Khantilever May 2, 2018 5:04 PM

I was not expecting it to be this slender. The original renderings definitely didn’t show how slim the side profile is.

F1 Tommy May 2, 2018 5:20 PM

Yes the reflectivity is very nice. Grey on grey days and blue on clear days. Turning out as good as I thought it would.

Chi-Sky21 May 2, 2018 7:03 PM

What is the base facing the highway supposed to be clad in ? I do not ever remember seeing a pic of the proposed finished building from that side.

Glass all the way down, hopefully.

I really hope this base turns out well. We haven't seen a rendering that features the base from the east, looking west, as far as I recall. So far, this is promising.

Chi-Sky21 May 3, 2018 1:50 PM

Nice, going to put that base on Skybridge to shame, maybe one day they can spruce that up a bit!

Side note: this is the second or third time in this thread that people have made comments that kinda sorta shit on Skybridge. I think people need to realize that when it was completed in 2002/03, Skybridge was considered different and somewhat revolutionary. The glass-enclosed corridors, window patterns, the rooftop steel cantilever, the open duplex penthouse and even the color scheme had not really been seem in condo highrise buildings before. Any similar-looking highrise that you may have seen pop up in almost any city in the world is BECAUSE of Skybridge, not the other way around - Skybridge was truly the first, anything else after it is really a knockoff.

While I love One South Halsted, it's hardly revolutionary, nor need it be - we have plenty of revolutionary buildings in Chicago.

left of center May 3, 2018 5:34 PM

^ I was taking freshman level Arch classes at the time, and I remember there being a lot of talk about Skybridge in class. It really was a total detour from conventional residential design. The building took a lot of flak from neighborhood groups in the West Loop that opposed it, mostly on density and height grounds, but also criticized the design as well. Really glad it survived that and became a reality.

It's just that the base has aged kind of badly. The tower and concept of it are still cool, but as someone said, it just need some sprucing up.

My gripe is with the base facing the highway. When a giant Whole Foods sign is seen by me as a drastic IMPROVEMENT....that is sad.

aaron38 May 3, 2018 7:47 PM

I didn’t realize how visible this would be for me. But there it is, with the orange formwork, just to the left of Presidential Towers. I bet it’ll stand out real good at sunset when the sun glints off of it.

727 W Madison has already asserted it's dominance west of the Kennedy. Today's image is a cloudy one but on a clear day the reflective glass is stunning.

Kumdogmillionaire May 14, 2018 3:44 AM

Its dominance is likely to be very short lived with its neighbor coming in on Randolph at almost 200 feet taller :)

Hoping the height on that one stays intact.
We shall see.

Agreed, that is a beautiful project that I'd love to see get built as designed.

Love the tower, but jesus that base is so lazy lol

Rooster slayer May 20, 2018 8:33 PM

It's presence is alpha on the Kennedy for sure. Sharp.

KWillChicago May 20, 2018 8:45 PM

That base will forever look half done. But I love the tower. Can we get six more on Halsted?

left of center May 21, 2018 5:14 PM

Jesus, I didn't think the city allowed parking to be exposed and visible level from tower podiums anymore

k1052 May 21, 2018 5:19 PM

OMG that's hysterically bad. City really needs to simply require that developers put in liner units since they obviously can't be trusted to do a halfway decent podium screen.

The city recently put this in the West Loop development guidelines, but developers aren't required to follow every recommendation.

That's a bit like asking a coal-fired factory to retrofit voluntarily tbh. At some point, we just need to force shady actors to do the right thing.

Before everyone freaks out about this, we should wait to see what the other sides will look like. This might just be for the side facing the Crowne Plaza. The side facing the Kennedy has a much more finished looked and seems to be turning out much better. I don't see any signs that the same treatment is going to be applied to the side facing Halsted or on the north side.

Even the rendering there is generous for how the north/south ends look. Yikes

Although I still reserve judgement until it's closer to being finished.

PittsburghPA May 22, 2018 5:23 AM

Does anyone know if this is topped out? there hasn't been much vertical activity in a few days.

Vooft, it's bad. I love how that one person's like let's wait until it's finished. Dude, look at the photo already. I sometimes wonder who's working for who around here.

I often wonder that too, but not from the standpoint of ulterior motives as much. Although I work for an interior designer, and our firm is spared a lot of the criticism that goes around on this forum, our work does include a lot of recently completed and in-progress buildings.

That said, we have really enjoyed working with Fitzgerald and would have loved to work on the interiors for this bad boy.

That's cool. Criticism is good though. Especially in this case, there's almost unanimous aversion to the base, so the hope is that the next time around they'll put more thought into it. The tower looks good.

Podium certainly leaves a lot to be desired but this tower is gorgeous and making her presence known from all angles

This is the first "big" tower I've seen happen from proposal to completion. Since I got into the world of skyscrapers about 19 months ago. Kind of emotional seeing it finish. :(

Don't worry. As someone who has been avidly watching skyscraper construction in Chicago since the early 2000's, I can say with confidence that the feeling of seeing new towers proposed, going under construction, and top off never fades.

Enjoy the experience of the tower rising, and be glad in knowing there will be many more to follow :)

I too have only inexplicably been following the minutia of skyscraper conception / proposal / construction for a bit over three years now, and it's great to see the real-time progress. We should consider ourselves lucky that our interest was stoked during this construction boom too.

As for this tower specifically, it's been said before on this forum, but it's worth repeating how unexpectedly slim it is from the N/S vantage points. I really like it.

Thanks for the pics, Solar!

Man, that garage... so unbelievably fugly. I thought the city banned this sort of exposed above grade parking back in the mid 00's. That glass does absolutely nothing to hide the concrete decks nor the cars that will be parking there.
