Work site looked empty today. Should we start worrying?

Could be that they took the today off. Some days like leap day could be consider a weekend by some companies. Or could be waiting for the tower crane to arrive since there isn't much left to do at this point.

West Street was closed off today between 5th and 6th. Could be they are ready to put the crane up.

Yay! From the photos it doesn't look like they left a ramp in place for the excavator to make an exit from the pit.

Austin_ez_wider Mar 2, 2016 5:20 PM

Tower crane?? They still have roughly 15 feet to excavate.

Based on the site plan the lowest garage level is 52.3' down. Not sure if they are there yet.

SkyPie Mar 5, 2016 10:28 PM

They were busy at the site today. Still digging by the looks of it.

I think they are using 2 x 12's to shore up the sides. If that's the case, it looks like they are at the 45 to 46 foot mark with about 6 feet to go.

A permit was filed today for lane closures to install the tower crane. May 13 through May 16 is the date of the installation.

A permit was also filed for a "mat foundation" concrete pour May 6 through May 9. The Google tower had a mat foundation.

I'm no expert but if they are placing concrete I'm assuming they are at the bottom of the excavation

That seems strange. I don't see any rebar that would be used in a mat foundation and there are no caissons (yet).

Looks like a "mud slab." Because the excavation terminates in this highly expansive shale soil, they immediately cap it with 3 to 4 inches of low strength concrete to protect it from the elements during construction. Otherwise the shale could swell tremendously. They just penetrate the mudslab with the foundation. I'm sure they are at the bottom here.

Grateful for you scraperwill - I had no idea about that kind of thing.

Really excellent picture of the site. This one has seemingly taken forever but just look at the scope of that hole and they have had such little staging area to work with.
