chicago skyline shots from the other side of lake michigan are always fun.
you need really clear air and a pretty powerful telephoto lens to fully capture the effect. and a bit of elevation gain from the numerous large sand dunes over there also helps. i'm quite fond of this one: http://investigate-nasa.com/wp-conte...10/chicago.jpg source: http://investigate-nasa.com/2015/11/...ve-calculator/ |
^ Heck, this is incredible... Nothing short of splendid. Love how both the lake and the sun do justice to it.

^ i realize the pic is quite outdated, but it's the best "across the lake" skyline shot i've ever seen, so i had to post it.

Winston-Salem:
This was taken near the Tennessee state line, about 85 miles / 137 kilometres west-northwest from downtown Winston-Salem. It is the longest distance photograph I have of the Winston-Salem's skyline. http://i.imgur.com/VYaqAs0.jpg Credit |
I don't have a photo but I can see Downtown Houston from the edge of Harris County on a freeway overpass.

It's from much further out than that. It's from western Ashe County. The distance was so impressive, it was in a news story, several years ago. You can see layers of mountains increasing in height. From what I've seen, you need a very clear day, the sun likely has to be on the other side of the skyline (notice most of these are just shadows from the back of the skyscrapers with a rising or setting sun behind them), and you need an amazing lens.
Winston-Salem: View from Fancy Gap, Virginia, taken by SSP/SSC forum member Flash. I found this on SSC, if I remember correctly? It's clear enough to identify the individual buildings. It's 46 miles / 75 kilometres. http://i.imgur.com/2DRd45I.jpg Has anyone tried to photograph Winston-Salem from West Virginia? The photograph above is about half-way to West Virginia. Something that surprises me: The Hawthorne Hill Skyline in Winston-Salem never shows-up in distance views? It should be to the right of downtown in the skyline view above. It must be hidden in a valley, behind the tall ridges in the city? |

Not sure if this is far, far or just far. This is mine of Chicago from the western suburb of Oak Brook, about 15 miles.
