This building combined with the creek redevlopment is going to make the neighborhood.
The tower is situated against and existing tree-lined park, it will have its own tree-lined
street which will also have several stores, cafes, other retail(?) along an expansive sidewalk.

The opposite side has just as many trees, so the potential is there to match it with retail
plus office/living/hotel space.

I'd love to redevelop it. They don't make entrances like that anymore. Those three encased areas behind the windows would make great places for tables in either a bar or restaurant. The bones of the building are awesome. I hope it stays and gets a good rehab in the next couple years.

Eww. No. That area is nothing like any part in NY. Looks more like downtown Laredo. Gross. Tear down and start over.

If in the past we had torn down every building as it became "gross" and started over San Antonio would have like six historic buildings left. Half of Southtown used to be pretty "gross", and thank God people had the foresight to not just "tear down and start over". It just needs a rehab, it's an incredible building. Plus it has a dank carriage entrance to the left that leads to a really cool unused courtyard that has an old barn or something out back. This thing is just oozing redevelopment potential.

Yeah. That area could really use another parking garage or chain hotel.

Buildings of that age are literally irreplaceable and help define SA's identity for many. It's important to keep what's left.

Really? These buildings have good bones and historic character and are totally salvageable to make nice again. If we went by your logic then historic preservation efforts wouldn't exist and areas like St. Pauls Square and the entire King William neighborhood would have been torn down a long time ago.

Uh huh. Anyway, those tile entrance ways are works of art themselves. This little building could be something really cool... like a more urban version of Viva Tacoland.

p.s. - Having lived in New York for 18 years I can testify that there are (or at least were) tons of places similar to this in the East Village, Inwood, old Tribeca, pre-hipster Brooklyn, even the old P&G Bar on 73rd & Amsterdam (which I hear has reopened a few blocks north).

That bar is rarely ever open. Always empty, dark, and closed. I drive by there a few times a week. The old downtown blog writer for the Express-News Benjamin Olivio wrote an article years ago about the one time he saw Reyes Bar open and went in and had a beer. I think the owners of the building live in the small shack behind the building. I sometimes see a Cadillac pull out of the alley next to the building that's chained up.

So it definitely needs to be redeveloped! Who's with me? I have plenty of experience in bars.

I don't think the only choices are either leave it there or put in some crappy generic hotel chain.

I mean, if you could choose between redeveloping the remnants of that building or build something like the Thompson, or Floodgate, which would you pick?

Some stuff is worth preserving, this doesn't fall in that category for me.
