Winnipeg - Concerts & Music Scene

I thought I should create a thread dedicated for what is going on in Winnipeg with regards to our music scene, which has been rated as one of the best in North America.

There is a rumor that U2 will be announcing a stop in Winnipeg on it's 2011 North American tour.

We saw Robert Cray last Sunday at the Garrick, saw David Gogo last night at the Pyramid. Both fantastic shows. You are sure correct about our music scene, one could see a great show more than once a week.

Saw U2 in Chicago and Vancouver last year. GREAT concerts! We were in the RedZone in Vancouver and met a guy who was working the Edmonton concert (the one that was supposed to be this last summer). He said that Winnipeg WAS penciled in on a list he saw. So, I believe the rumour could very well be true. If so, I will go see the 360 concert again, no question.

if you walk through downtown and look at taped up ads on street lamps, perhaps.

hey, I don't understand the handle, and I'm not particularly interested, but I don't begrudge the guy for tryin to make it in the music business.

1ajs has stated he puts up said flyers for him, perhaps others, so theres where his interest comes from.

also, the U2 360 Tour 2011, live, May 29th, 2011 at Canad-Inns Stadium!
Very special guests: The Fray - Tickets are $30, $55, $95 and $250 (plus applicable service fees/ taxes) and go on-sale at 10 AM, Monday, October 25th at all Ticketmaster outlets.

I don't like U2 enough for $250, but for $30-$95, maybe.. I've got a few days to decide I guess..

Josh Ritter, next tuesday at the WECC. For me, thats better than U2, or just about anybody else out there.

I think overall we've got a great scene though; there's local stuff going on virtually any night of the week, and a lot of it is pretty decent, depending on your tastes, ofcourse.

1ajs Oct 20, 2010 5:31 AM

local music promoters brought mat in for the show called musicfirst

also the beats antque show has lots of local acts two.......

U2 Wows Winnipeg

U2 Wows Winnipeg

WINNIPEG - That garish four-legged thing: they call it the claw, or the spaceship, or – less fantastically – the structure.

No matter what the name, the claw is, at 50 metres tall, the largest piece of rock’n’roll furniture ever built. It is a looming aberration of olive-green skin pulled taut over scaffold bones and pierced by a spear of light.

It serves a purpose: its four talons shelter the stage and up to 2,000 fans, die-hards who camped out for up to four days for the honour of being wrapped by its lurid embrace.

......

"Thank you Winnipeg," Bono said, as he gently moved into the last chorus of the luscious ballad of With Or Without You. "Take out your phones. Take them out and turn this place into the Milky Way."

And as the spotlights on the claw dimmed to nothing and a liquid blackness enveloped Canad Inns Stadium, 50,000 flickers sparked and danced, buoyed by the lingering romance of a dream that never quite fades away.

Pearl Jam Coming To Winnipeg

Pearl Jam 20th anniversary tour includes Winnipeg show
By: Staff Writer

Posted: 05/16/2011 11:02 AM |

Seattle rock band Pearl Jam is still alive and will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a Canadian tour, which includes a Winnipeg stop.

The group will play the MTS Centre on Sept. 17 with fellow grunge legends Mudhoney as part of a nine-city Canadian tour.

Tickets for all shows are $69.50 and go on sale May 27 on the band’s website, pearljam.com, and Ticketmaster. Two dollars from each ticket sold will be donated to the Vitalogy Foundation, which grants money to non-profit groups chosen by members of the quintet.

As part of the anniversary celebrations this year, the band released a new compilation album, Live on Ten Legs, and expanded re-reissues of Vs. and Vitalogy.

In September the Cameron Crowe documentary film, Pearl Jam Twenty, will debut and be accompanied by a book and soundtrack album.

So yeah, woke up this morning with my ears still ringing from the U2 concert last night, and the show was just mind blowing and amazing!! Now I know why these guys rocked it hard since the late 80's!

Mind you, this was my first U2 concert. I'm so glad I was able to go! :D

Now, if Rush can be back in town, then I'm down for them as well!

Man, I haven't seen Rush since they were touring with Max Webster!

flatlander May 30, 2011 6:30 PM

Geez all the closet Rush fans are coming out.

I saw them in Stuttgart. Crazy show.

vid May 30, 2011 8:37 PM

I was unaware that this forum had closet Rush fans. Go to the skybar and post a photo of Geddy Lee and you'll become the most popular person there for a day.

:jester::jester::jester: Quoted for truth.

I didn't think it was possible to be a closet Rush fan on the Internet. Say even the slightest disparaging comment about Geddy Lee's shrieking howl and you'll be firebombed by a legion of "you just don't understand GOOD music" types.

Rush is one of those things in life where the fanbase refuses to acknowledge the reality we all live in, the one where tastes and opinions can actually vary. And they're very vocal about their refusal to accept reality, too. Actually, they remind me a lot of Boomers when you bring up the Beatles. Or that certain subset of GenX and Y'ers when you mention Cobain.
