Cool shot, Jerry. This is zoomed in so it's hard to tell, but how much of an impact will this make on your view to the north? Will it dominate in relation to everything else, or more or less be just another building in the cacophony of city in that direction?

Van Ness will be closed this weekend for the final phase of pedestrian tunnel construction. Here's an interesting video that describes the entire process for installing the tunnel:

Good find, very cool PG. I had wondered how this was being done.

CPMC will definitely be quite noticeable.

They've been very busy across the street at the medical office building, I see. Thanks for the update.

viewguysf Nov 21, 2015 6:54 PM

This is a real game changer on Van Ness--you can already sense it. Many doctors and medical offices are already moving into area buildings in anticipation of it (I've experienced two now with new beautiful offices). Most of all, two huge sections of blight have disappeared and are being dramatically transformed, making the neighborhood much more pleasing and dynamic.

^Interesting. Plus there are all the other new buildings going up along Van Ness. Once BRT finally goes in, the entire street will have completely transformed.

^Looks like they're having a sword fight.

I took this driving up Van Ness yesterday (I was stopped at a light, not shooting and driving):

CPMC’s Cathedral Hill Hospital Has Topped Out

They can put a Christmas tree on the top if they want, but it's a while from being topped out.

It is topped out when the highest roof steel bar is installed. It has nothing to do with the progress of the structure as a whole. The steel installation itself isn't even finished, it simply has reached its top height. It is a tradition for ironworkers to paint the this steel bar white, and to sign it.

Wrong. It represents the last main structural element which is usually also the highest. It is meant to signify the completion of the structure which this is not.

My bad. You had better go down to the work site and tell the ironworkers they made a mistake.

BTW, there is a difference between 'topping out' and 'structurally complete', even if they sometimes happen at the same time.

I think the timing of the ceremony had less to do with the actual construction status and more to do with a date set months ago based on not wanting it to be too close to the holidays and the tent already having been booked and the invitations gone out.

Delayed Update from 1/25/16

Even though I took these two months ago, I'm belatedly posting them because they show a lot of progress since their bizarre "topping out" ceremony.

Walked by yesterday but didn't have a chance to take pictures, glass has started to go up on the Post St side.
