What is your opinion on these buildings ?
I want them for SimCity! :)
They are very nice. I give them an 8.
Quite interesting, I also gave it an 8.
7. would be even better if they were diagonal from one another (think WTC) instead of side-by-side.
I gave them a five. IMHO i really dont like their design.
I gave them a 5. The one on the left isn't too bad, but both of them are severely disproportionate, and the base is quite awkward.
9. I really like them, but they aren't "perfect."
I gave them an 8. The fact that they are not identical helps IMO. I think they are a perfect fit for LA.

And I wouldn't mind having the model at home !! The one on the right really have a 1920's art deco N.-Y. style  but the left one is... I don't like the bulb on top !! |
I can't vote out of context. As pure sculpture I like them very much but as buildings in a city they are too old fashioned for most places. The taller building is about 60 stories so it would be very promanant on the skyline. They would work in NY, particularly downtown or in Chicago. In any other city buildings that look that old shouldn't be that tall. It is unnatural.
8. Great if they were built at the proper historical period, but postmodernism would find a way to make them tacky.
It would also be nice if the height order was flipped. The one on the left looks more appropriate to be the taller tower of the two. Overall, great classic designs. |
7/10 I like the design and think it's a perfect fit for LA. Only negative would be that they aren't really a representation of the time. Copying historical architecture can be a big mistake if not done right.
I like these buildings. I'm usually not a big fan of trying to copy something from another era, but these are interesting. I wouldn't like these for a city like Hong Kong for example, I think these would blend in fine with LA skyline and backdrop.
I give them an 8/10..

my opinion expressed ad nauseum in the other thread....kitsch....cartoon architecture.....pure decorative wallpaper...design using the crutch of the past....sacrifices natural light for fake old stylistic replication.....completely dishonest architecure...has no spirit or innovation.....even as a knock off old building it is way out of scale and references historic styles that are inapproriate for this type of building....deco would have at least had some precedent.....the architect had no imagination whatsoever.....i bet he drives a PT cruiser.
yarabundi...there is no art deco in that design...it is a mish mash of a half dozen other thousand year old styles, but nothing from the last 2 centuries. if this building was a car...it would be this..... http://asprise.com/product/jtwain/ap...-cruiser-2.jpg |
I really don't get why everybody hates these types of designs. Some people complain saying "to hell with all this modern crap, let's bring back some real classics" and then when they get what they want they call it kitsch.
Those particular buildings above I don't really like but I honestly have no problem with towers like this: http://www.emporis.com/files/transfe.../06/151131.jpg |

Why does it have to conform to some era or type of design.....can't it just look good to the average person? If I were designing a building I would design it to appeal to the masses, not to the architecture community, which makes up a miniscule portion of the population. I'm sorry, but this building will look good to the average person. 8 out of 10 people will find this building cool.....isn't that the goal you'd want to achieve? |

BTW, can someone guess where and when the building below was built? :D http://static.flickr.com/69/189965453_55b222c68e.jpg |
seems like i am the only one actually analyzing it....can someone tell me what they like about them?....besides they remind you of something old?
mass appeal is hardly the definition of design quality...it is actually almost always the inverse...in all areas of the art world....to be popular is to be watered down and generic.....celine dion is one of the most popular singers in the world......does her popularity mean that she is the best musician? more people have one of these hanging in their homes than any leonardo or botticelli...will you argue that because it is popular, it must then be better design? http://www.velvetpaintings.com/Velve...w-Gold-500.jpg |
