hell yeah dan, thanks for the update! I see dancing nanners coming soon.

Skyguy_7 Feb 13, 2017 5:16 PM

Great update Schell. Hope you don't mind, but I sent the top pic to my buddy at Stevenson, so you might see it up on their next billboard.

jc5680 Feb 13, 2017 5:29 PM

Not for nothing, but Stevenson can't use the photo unless Dan grants permission. If they are going to use it on a billboard (or any other brand promotion media), they should pay for the rights.

Skyguy_7 Feb 13, 2017 6:03 PM

^I'd agree with you, if my comment weren't tongue in cheek! My pal appreciated the photo but I had him assure me that we will not see it on any billboards.

If drilling begins before another tower finishes construction, then we will have 50 active skyscrapers under construction in the city.

Has that ever happened before?

Does your count include Wicker Park Connection? That wasn't on page 1.

Damn that is awesome. Was driving home down Eastbound Kennedy this afternoon, and just looking across the Chicago landscape seeing so many cranes was amazing!

What a time to be alive. in Chicago.

No. Which means we are already at 50

2PRUROCKS! Feb 14, 2017 2:00 AM

4 E Elm, Vue 53, the U of C dorms, and Nich 405 are all complete. There are probably a few others on the boom rundown list that are also complete. So we still have a bit to go before reaching 50 under construction.

Yes! Let's pressure the Kennedy and surround the drivers to remind them where they are! Maybe soon we can start seeing more dream proposals for capping the expressway in place for a park, maybe some day it can be a reality

It's a parking garage, but am I crazy to think this gets a lot of things right? There are a couple of floors of active uses, big sidewalks, and the tower itself sits to the side of it rather than on top.

The best response is to continue to ignore the community, build more towers, and just ram in more density till the NIMBYs all give up on their utopia and move to North Center

Quote:

Among those opposed to the development is Melissa G. Wilson, a long-time neighborhood resident.
“It’s devastating because it changes the whole fabric of this area. We’re going from a community that knows its neighbors to a neighborhood of transient apartment dwellers.”

Wilson says she thought the Greektown neighborhood was “the best place ever” when she moved in so much so that she bought two condominiums in her building.
So either Ms. Wilson is living in two condos at once, or she's renting it out. While she's happily making money off of "transient apartment dwellers" she doesn't want any more of 'those' people.
Hypocrite.

I think the secret sauce is elevating the parking levels on pilotis above the sidewalk. By providing two levels of active use (office? amenities? hotel meeting space?) above the ground floor retail, it doesn't have the same dead River North feeling you get when the second floor is all blank. You don't really see blank walls (or cars) until the fourth floor, and you have to crane your neck to even see it.

MiLa had some similar moves, building a tall glassy "chandelier atrium" on the Michigan Ave side in front of the podium. 111 S Wacker did it too, in more dramatic fashion.

Architects know how to solve the podium problem, and the answer is not "stick the parking underground". But it usually comes with extra cost to the developer. I'd like to see an optional design review process that developers could undertake that would encourage these types of architectural solutions, with the carrot of density bonuses. Unfortunately Rahm decided it was better to just charge developers in cash rather than in better architecture.

KWILLSKYLINE Apr 5, 2017 3:21 PM

Any major movement on this lately, or still just digging? seems to have been quiet.

I hate to burst the bubble here, but with the redesign the active uses above the first floor will be gone. This is really going to be an old school parking blob :yuck:

Chicago E Apr 8, 2017 10:41 PM

I used to park my car for many years first in the parking lot on the nec of Halsted and Madison but then the high rise with the former Dominicks was built. So I moved to this lot which was infamous as being the site in the early 90's where televisions were being thrown from the hotel next to this site (south). I believe it was some disgruntled basketball player (former DePaul player.....could be wrong) who was mentally ill and lost it by throwing things from his hotel room on a top floor onto the cars on this lot. My car was not there that day but actually its condition at the time would not have probably mattered. Glad to see this building going up. The comment on page one about the Kennedy Expressway being Canyonized (sorry if spelling is poor) is a great observation. This will be a great addition to the skyline.

KWILLSKYLINE Apr 13, 2017 2:26 PM

Was that former DePaul players name Vince Neil or Nikki Sixx by any chance?

Not sure if anyone would get that joke. It was worth a try.
