Doesn't seem to have much of a spire.

Scruffy May 9, 2008 4:27 PM

If you look at it from the side, its really narrow for its height. it looks like an 800 foot spire

trvlr70 May 9, 2008 6:22 PM

Considering its height, you'd think you'd notice it more often. The location[generally] is awesome, however.

plinko May 11, 2008 8:56 PM

Exquisitely proportioned...seems this building gets lost in the skyline. Hard to believe it's actually taller than Chase Manhattan or PanAm. It might be the most obscure 800'+ tower in the city.

Patrick May 11, 2008 9:58 PM

Ah, one of my favorite New York Buildings, really dose get lost in the skyline, but makes an impressive cluster with The Metropolitan and Caranagie Hall Tower.

i remember 4 years back when i first visited manhattan i had never heard of this building and was amazed by how tall it was. I kept thinking, 'it can't be so damn tall if i've never heard of it'

probably the most obscure unknown in the US. I like it.

Scruffy May 14, 2008 11:31 AM

its ok. But im in love with the Carnegie Hall Tower across the street

Fabb May 14, 2008 1:08 PM

I think they are on the same block actually. But I may be wrong...

Antares41 May 14, 2008 2:29 PM

Actually Cityspire is on the southside of 56th street and right across from it is Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Towers on the northside of 56th thus the close cluster we've all grown to know and love.

Lecom May 17, 2008 4:36 AM

Looking up between Cityspire, Carnegie hall Tower and Metropolitan tower is one of the most exhilirating experiences New York can provide, and that's saying a lot.

Chi649 May 17, 2008 5:21 AM

Interesting shape. Nice top. I like this one

Jibba May 17, 2008 5:34 AM

Looks very stately. It's always nice to see something decent and tall that came out of the 80s; it kind of restores my faith a little.

That, I'd have to agree with. Every morning and night while in NYC that tower would dominate the view from my hotel room. I loved actually staying in a hotel on 56th. I never got tired of being in the middle of that cluster

charmedone Sep 14, 2008 7:38 PM

Wrightguy0 Sep 15, 2008 12:10 AM

No, it's called Le Parker Meridien, it's the skinny white one between Carnegie Hall tower and Cityspire

America 117 Sep 15, 2008 1:00 AM

Nice!!!
i love this tower.
one of the best in NYC

Islander Sep 16, 2008 1:23 AM

There's something about this tower that makes it feel about 100 feet taller than it is. The massing is like some kind of crazy cross between Art Deco and "futuristic space ship."

volguus zildrohar Sep 16, 2008 4:58 AM

Only The Chrysler Building makes my loins quiver with such fervor. I'm channeling STLGasm on this one - one of my favorite buildings on the planet. (I'm really liking BofA too).

NYguy Jan 17, 2010 2:21 PM

Once the city's tallest residential tower. Never quite knew what to make of it though, don't hate it, but don't exactly love it either...

Dac150 Jan 17, 2010 4:28 PM

I’m sure you wouldn’t mind it if you lived in one of the top floors.;)

It’s a quintessential 80’s residential tower; but I’ve never had a problem with it. It actually blends in quite well; nothing about it despite its height really jumps out at you. I do think that the trio was made for one another.

RLS_rls Jan 17, 2010 4:55 PM

It's kind of a tacky design...it's strange that it's so tall. I don't know if I like black glass and white stone...

Speaking of which, whats the siding? Granite? It's looking pretty rough.

Duffstuff129 Jan 17, 2010 10:17 PM

This building is so unapologetic unique and bold. It clearly states that it has no desire to channel other buildings around it, simply presenting itself in terms of its own appearance.

Jasonhouse Jan 18, 2010 4:30 AM

I've known of this building since it was built. (I've been a Helmut Jahn fan for a long time) I remember it standing out, because for a while there, it was the tallest new building built in NYC. IIRC, it's still the tallest mixed-use building in the city.

Antares41 Jan 18, 2010 4:45 AM

I to am a fan of this building. It rather obscure due to its location and being hidden by two over 700 foot buildings. You really have to walk almost right under it to full appreciate it height. It was interesting building to draw.

NYguy Jan 18, 2010 2:39 PM

I recall there being some problem with a "whistling" sound from the roof when it was first bult. I agree that it works well as part of the "trio", though all are about to be eclipsed by a taller tower (or become a quartet of one taller an 3 shorter towers).

MolsonExport Jun 24, 2010 1:01 PM

I recall the tower going up during my first visit to the big apple in 1986. There were few big buildings going up at that time. Times Square was still full of porno cinemas and stank of piss. The grit and the shit.

Tex17 Jul 31, 2010 4:15 PM

Not sure why, but I wasn't real big on it when I first saw it in pictures. It's really grown on me, though, and I find it quite nice now.

Fabb Apr 19, 2011 2:28 PM

Soon to end its reign as the taller tower in the "Carnegie cluster" ...

I've always thought Citispire was an incredible building. The central octagonal form is very unique. The form is so slender when viewed from the side as you're walking across 55th or 56th... and then massively wide with hulking sturdiness with its rising tiers as you pass at its base.

$100 million! The most expensive apartment in the country hits the market
The 8,000-square foot “one-of-a-kind gem” is believed to have the highest outdoor space in any New York City residence.

The most-expensive apartment in the country — a triplex, wrap-around penthouse on W. 56th Street — can now be yours for just $100 million. Raphael De Niro, the son of actor Robert De Niro, has the exclusive listing on the 73rd through 76th floor aerie atop CitySpire — the deluxe apartment in the sky owned by Long Island real estate developer Steven Klar.

The 8,000-square-foot octagon-shaped unit is a "one-of-a-kind gem [that] ranks amongst the most elite homes in America," according to the Prudential Douglas Elliman listing. The apartment isn’t for everyone — and not because of the nine-figure pricetag.

Architect Juan Pablo Molyneux took the original raw space and created an aristocratic interior with inlaid marble floors, stately columns, gold draperies and candeliers.

Other features include:
-- a private, three-story elevator.
-- A wrap-around terrace on all three floors that offers 360-degree views of the city. It’s believed to be the highest outdoor space in any city residence.
-- A dining room that can seat 20.
-- A silver closet.
-- A wine room that can hold more than 1,000 bottles.

Klar bought the property in 1993 for $4.5 million and then spent about as much to renovate it to his tastes. He made his riches building thousands of homes on Long Island.

CitySpire was constructed in 1988 and the building immediately created controversy. The original developer, Ian Bruce Eichner, built the tower higher than building codes allowed, but the city eventually negotiated a settlement that required Eichner to construct a dance studio at another site. Also, the louvers on the top of the building whistled so loudly that area residents complained. The city repeatedly threatened fines, so the developers adjusted the structure to allow wind to pass through without creating such a racket.

^I better get my bid in early.

Pete8680 Nov 4, 2014 5:13 AM

This was Manhattan's 9th tallest when built, tallest built in the 80s in the city and second tallest concrete skyscraper in the world @ the time. It is still NYC's tallest mixed use (4 now). According 2 wic-e-p-d-uh it was supposed to b 800 feet but was "accidently" built as 814 feet. Sureeeeeeeee, I think that 14 feet was added 2 surpass Chase Manhattan & PanAm! Also as pointed out by others it made "noise". The fines 4 breaking all the codes must of bin expensive. Its a "don't love it don't hate it" building 2 me.

Funny I get the opposite reaction. It looks 100 feet shorter 2 me. I think because it doesn't stand out like it once did.
