Doubt it. Gold coast is my favourite in this thread, but just out of curiosity, are there any non-residential towers there? It looks like it's all condos and apartments.

mthd Oct 31, 2009 10:44 PM

if the gold coast really counts - there are 500,000 people in the gold coast LGA itself - and it's only an hour from Brisbane - then it wins!

of the truly 'small' cities, corpus christi is pretty nice.

Same goes for Ann Arbor imo, since it is officially part of the greater Detroit metro area. That's why I didn't include Covington, Ky, because it is officially part of the Cincinnati metro.

Yeah, but A^2 is part of Detroit's CSA, not MSA.
These definitions get a little bit weird depending on the jurisdiction. In another place or time Essex County would count too for MSA(since that's the US Census methodology), with an additional 393,000.

And the Covington or Evanston argument would then apply here as well:

An Iowan's input:

Des Moines is my pick for best overall, although it's getting close to that 600k mark.

No, it shouldn't....it's like calling Mississauga the same thing...although it does have 700,000+ ppl :sly:

I think Des Moines is definitely tops. Either way, here's Mobile AGAIN :) I think Mobtown def wins as far as height goes. Also, see that ugly building that just looks like a slab of concrete? It's getting renovated!!!

Hey LMich, the first Jackson pic is mine. :D

I think Midland, Texas has a decent skyline for a metro area of 260,000:

And Rochester, MN is impressive too for a metro of about 180,000:

Yes, it is weird when you look at the big picture sort of speak, because geographically Windsor is right across the river from Detroit while Ann Arbor is miles away, yet Windsor is thought of more as being independent of Detroit and Ann Arrbor isn't.

Blitz Nov 22, 2009 10:16 PM

^ The idiotic passport requirement has only strengthened that independence, unfortunately.

Harrisburg's got a pretty impressive skyline:

One of the best angles is from the PA Turnpike bridge across the Susq.

And yes, I totally did yank those images from a state website.

Resort cities have a natural advantage. Because of the nature of their existence they require infrastructure and housing for many times their permanent population. Beach resort cities especially have that advantage, because the whole point is that everyone wants to be as close to the beach as possible.

Ocean City, MD (pictured earlier) is the exact same phenomenon on a smaller scale, but pick any beach resort city in the world and you will see the same thing.
