The China World Trade Center (CWTC) development in Beijing is a large long-term project in the heart of Beijing’s Central Business District (CBD).

For Phase Three, a new tower is being erected that will become the tallest building in Beijing at 330m. It will feature office accommodation, a five-star hotel at the top of the building, as well as retail and entertainment venues.

About the tower
* 330m tall
* 300 000m² floor area
* 73 storeys

Here are a few of the photos I've taken of it recently:

Just like with the CCTV thread, I will be adding new photos frequently!

(this was my first 'new topic' on the forum, so apologies if I missed anything!)

Great thread, Tom. You're like SSP's ambassador to Beijing. Was this building designed by SOM?

WonderlandPark Jul 10, 2007 2:47 PM

Great, thx for posting

beijingtom Jul 10, 2007 2:55 PM

Yep, SOM

Yep, architecture by SOM. Just checked their site, their info is slightly different from ARUP's (always nice to have the architects and engineers not talk to eachother!)

Project Facts

Year Completed: 2007
Site Area: 36,421 m2
Project Area: 280,000 m2
Building Height: 330 m
Number of Stories: 85

Their rendering seems slightly more up to date:

They also have quite a few close ups, fortuitously also one of the top of the building, which I hadn't seen before, looks nice, not overdone like most places here:

A few more shots can be found on their site (direct link).

Nice building, it´s something between US 7 and factory funnel. So, 73 or 85 floors? Currently status is about 55

This sucker is gonna stick out in it's surroundings.....

DUBAI2015 Jul 10, 2007 7:51 PM

Kinda looks like the chinese version of the World Trade Center in New York.
I love it!

A very, very rare real blue sky day

Just took some photos during my lunch break, amazing day today (there are only a few real blue sky days a year in Beijing)!

A shot from the base of the tower:

Here are some of the surroundings- I think the renderings tend to 'forget' about a lot of buildings that are actually already there, or are still u/c. I don't think it will 'stick out' as much as the renderings suggest:

On a related note, due to the interest in this building, I've collected all my shots into a set just now:

Enjoy!

Thanks Tom!

Terrific pics!

I love the rendering of the crown. Hopefully, it's not an older version.

colemonkee Jul 11, 2007 6:02 PM

My favorite thing about this design are the undulating corners. Viewed from afar, it gives a very subtle pagoda effect as the tower tapers up. You can see it in the first renders from cwtc.com. It's a way of injecting a cultural reference into a very modern tower without being overt about it (re: Taipei 101).

Height vs cladding

The cladding seems to be lagging behind the incessant progression of new floors being added, this is how high she's become now:

A close up of the highest point:

I counted almost 60 floors.
The topping out is getting close.

I've only just discovered this building. Good thing I did too, I really like it.

Stephenapolis Sep 2, 2007 4:20 AM

This tower is looking very nice. I really like the windows at the corners. This building does not seem to want to intimidate its surroundings. It seems to fit in quite nicely.

rbowk Sep 2, 2007 6:00 AM

nice building
