^ I don't get your criticism of this structure. It is a form of art. There is no wrong or right. No good or bad. It's all subjective anyway. What you call "vomitous" is awe-inspiring for somebody else.

Anyway, it'll be another point of interest for the city, which will make the city that much more interesting. Would you happier if there was nothing there instead?

Exactly, it will be one of the new, non-skyscraper icons of the city. It's interesting to watch this begin to take shape along with the New York Wheel on Staten Island. New York is never done, so everything you think you know about NY is just part of a larger story still being told (think of it that way).

This structure, like the NY Wheel, like the new parks and attractions being built around the city, after they're built and have taken their rightful place in the city fabric, will seem as natural as the Empire State or Central Park in belonging here. There was a time when NY didn't have those either. I'm sure there were those who thought putting that statue of a woman in the harbor (of all places), was a ridiculous idea too. There's a critic for everything.

Maybe not . . there are cool things about it . .
it has texture, it is very interactive, a good place to exercise . .
but for all its focal positioning, expense, energy, material & hype . .
I also see a big, hyper-complex, tedious picnic-basket . .
a severely symmetrical geometric form of common proportion . .
an Escher-esque nightmare . . generating "stress-producing" vibes . .
rancorous enough to agitate our urban experience . .
It's a perfect location for shooting high-anxiety movie scenes . .
like Hitchcock's Vertigo . .

It's a design that's anything, but soothing . .
like a refreshing grand fountain . . or an unusual water feature . .
It's not a graceful architectural monument, . .
or preeminent landscape-engineering feature.
We might've had an supremely vertical avant-garde abstraction . .
with phenomenal 22nd-century night-lighting aspects . .
(no Koons steel-balloon dog) . . something aesthetically wonerful . .
in contrast to the mostly undistinguished HY glass building shapes . .

The intrusive bulky vessel, next to the boxy culture-shed . .
both in such close proximity . . awkwardly similar in volume and proportion
. . seems to hijack what could've been a beautiful open sweep . .
of a landscaped avenue handsomely joining the plaza . .

Everything that's built isn't great . . they ripped down Penn Station to build MSG . .
think the Colosseum complex at Columbus Circle . .
What about that modern mistake blocking the entrance
to McKim, Mead & White's Brooklyn Museum entrance . .

I know. We are getting this exact The Vessel.
So, should we just shut up already, & like it ? . .
everyone roll over & let developers promise glorious focal points . .
surpassing even the Eiffel Tower, . . then allow them to deliver
monstrous picnic baskets instead . . Thank you, your omnipotence ! . .
It is our city as much as theirs . . As a citizen of NYC, I reserve the right
to bitch . . then change my mind . . perhaps, eventually learn to like it . .

Oh please. No one said you had to like it. The fact remains, not everything is liked by everyone. Don't just assume everyone loves the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty. Lots of people hate Times Square, some think Central Park is too big and overrated. There are those who insist a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is pointless. I get all of that. But you know what? None of that matters, because those places are iconic and draw crowds anyway, critics be damned. So the point is not to insists that YOU personally like it, but to understand that it will be everything Related intended it to be. Just sit back with your arms crossed and watch everyone else who will, enjoy it.

The weight of the cargo, it turns out, exceeded what’s permitted on 11th Avenue, so Related will have to add extra support to the roadway to get the pieces over to the Eastern Yards.

The 16-story sculpture, designed by Thomas Heatherwick and dubbed “the Vessel,” will cost $180 million (a higher price tag than announced in September because it includes other associated costs, like landscaping). Blau envisions the piece as a “365-day a year Christmas tree” that will be a must-see for all New York City visitors, something of a Rockefeller Center on the Far West Side.

Blau discussed the project at a panel on Friday held by Hundred Stories and the 92nd Street YMCA as part of a real estate summit entitled “City of Tomorrow.” Blau shared the stage with two other giants in the development community, Harry Macklowe and Ian Schrager, to discuss how they and their peers are shaping the city’s skyline.

When the moderator asked how the developers think about their responsibility to the city beyond their individual buildings, Blau cited the Vessel — which will have some 2,500 steps that visitors can climb — and the six-acre public open space at the center of Hudson Yards as an example of how developers can contribute to the public good.

Oh man, I wonder how much extra time that means in terms of them resuming construction of the Vessel

so the stairs came all this way and now they cant get it across the street? thats pretty funny actually. oh the humanity, right? yeah there will be some delay. i'm sure they can work it out.

I love all the things you mentioned . . Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty.
Times Square lights in the rain . . always see the value of Central Park . .
I once thought a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge was pointless . .
until I did it a few times . . but I always thought it beautiful . .

I just don't find this thing attractive . .
all those perfect, affluent, squeeky-clean, revoltingly-happy people . .
(as pictured in the promotional renderings) . .
enjoying themselves so thoroughly, . . in, on, & around this "sculpture" . .
they just look so incongruent, . .
juxtaposed with the tediously depressive "Vessel" . .

anyway, . . since this is what we're getting,
I certainly do hope that everybody enjoys it . .
and that not too many of them fall to their death . .

I wonder if they might erect another crane to transfer the parts of Vessel across 11th Avenue ... might be less expensive than strengthening the road ...

Haven't looked at that, but it will be interesting to watch this take shape along with the NY Wheel on Staten Island. Both similar, yet different projects that will become icons in the new New York.
