San Antonio International Airport Announces New Air Service to Colorado Springs
City of San Antonio Aviation Department
SAN ANTONIO (September 19, 2017) – San Antonio International Airport announces a new Frontier Airlines non-stop flight to Colorado Springs, Colorado. The addition of this new service underscores that Frontier continues to recognize the market opportunity San Antonio presents. This service will begin on April 8th and will be offered three times per week. Tickets can be purchased beginning today. “These new routes continue to connect people to the places they want to travel,” said Richard Oliver, spokesman for Frontier Airlines. “With our low fares and reliable service, we offer the best value in travel.” “Frontier continues to show significant investment in San Antonio and our region, and this new air service is just the latest example,” said Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio. “This service will provide a direct connection for military personnel, Olympic caliber athletes and other business and leisure travelers.” This is another result of the ongoing efforts the airport has put forth toward pursuing additional air service and the support of economic growth for the City of San Antonio and the South Texas region. |

Local leaders believe the commitment from the Mexican carrier should be further motivation to try and position the Alamo City as the aeronautic gateway between the U.S. and Latin America. Volaris, which already offered flights between San Antonio and Guadalajara, is expanding its relationship with the Alamo City. On Sept. 15, the airline flew its first aircraft from Mexico City to San Antonio International. San Antonio Tourism Council President and CEO Marco Barros said the investment by Volaris is an indication that there is pent-up demand and a real opportunity to position the city as a key point of connectivity with multiple Mexican destinations, a well as with markets in Central and South America. “A lot of people from Austin are already coming here to get into Mexico. If we can have great connections to Cabos San Lucas and a few other destinations, we will pick up more and more passengers,” Barros said. “We’ve seen the trend. Every time a Mexican carrier starts service here, it attracts more and more international travelers. So this [Volaris expansion] is a huge gain.” But Barros believes there is plenty of demand for more flights to additional markets — including destinations such as Panama City. “If we can get one or two connecting flights out of Panama City, we could own entry to Latin America,” Barros said. The first step is to pursue additional opportunities to better connect with Mexico. “We need to become the front door to Mexico,” Barros said. That’s where airlines like Volaris could play a critical role, helping connect San Antonio with more Latin American destinations. “San Antonio represents an important market for us. Around half of the population of the San Antonio metropolitan area — about 2 million people — is Hispanic. That’s why we are targeting San Antonio,” said Juliana Ramirez, manager of ancillary revenue for Volaris. “We have a big team of analysts who are analyzing the demand. If we see that customers want this, we will definitely look at expansion opportunities in San Antonio.” Barros said there is an opportunity and an economic incentive for San Antonio to better connect with key cities in countries like Argentina, Brazil and Chile. San Antonio Aviation Director Russ Handy said the idea of positioning the Alamo City as a major connection point with Latin America is not so far fetched. “Given interest from our Mexican airline partners, we are examining how we would handle such business logistically,” he said. “We frequently engage with them on market possibilities and would welcome the possibility of growing our connections from here to become that gateway to Mexico and beyond.” |
San Antonio lands new nonstop East Coast flights
By W. Scott Bailey – Senior Reporter, San Antonio Business Journal
2 hours ago Updated an hour ago San Antonio International Airport continues to rack up more wins. The latest is new daily nonstop flights between the Alamo City and Philadelphia International Airport in a deal struck with American Airlines. The carrier will launch the new service between the two cities beginning on Feb. 15. San Antonio officials said the new flights will provide much-needed capacity to the Northeast and provide passengers key access to American Airlines’ primary transatlantic gateway. San Antonio Aviation Director Russ Handy said there is currently only one other airline providing access between the Alamo City and Philadelphia — on a seasonal basis. Brian Pratte, air services administrator for the city of San Antonio, who has been tasked with improving air access to and from the market, said local officials have been working on the new Philadelphia flights with American Airlines for at least 18 months. Pratte said the new deal with American Airlines will provide greater access “to our largest under-served market and international access via their major hub.” The new commitment from American Airlines follows a series of wins for San Antonio airport officials. Last month, I reported that Frontier Airlines will launch new nonstop flights between San Antonio and Colorado Springs, Colorado, in April. This is the third time since July that the company has unveiled plans to expand service to and from the Alamo City. Late last month, Volaris initiated nonstop service from San Antonio International Airport to Mexico City International Airport. All of this comes as a record number of passengers pass through the terminals at SAT. Last month I reported that, in July, more than 848,000 ticket holders flew into or out of San Antonio’s largest airport. That set an all-time record for SAT and was a nearly 6 percent increase over passenger traffic during July 2016. Airport officials expect the trend will continue — especially as more airlines move to meet the growing demand. |
